Horsheshoes, FREE Movies, and Needles...

It's Friday! Here are a couple of things to remember before this Halloween weekend:

Intramural Horseshoes is almost here! Sign-up sheets are available outside the SGA Office in Union Station in the Kirk Building. Sign up with a partner or by yourself and we can make it work.

Worried about the flu? Flu shots are being given today at the former Hagan's Dodge building on Broadway in Morrilton. Shots will be given from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, drive-thru style, so head over when you get a chance and get immunized.

Want to save a life? The American Red Cross will be on campus next Monday, November 2 and Thursday, November 5 to conduct a blood drive. Just look for the Bloodmobile and head on in when you get a chance.

Finally, tonight marks the final Starlight Cinema Free movie night of the semester! We've moved tonight's event into the Fine Arts Auditorium for fear that moviegoers may float away while laying in the usual movie night spot on the Plaza Courtyard lawn. We'll be watching "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" and enjoying popcorn and drinks while we watch it beginning at approximately 6:30 pm. So stop by and check out the movie before you can rent it on DVD for FREE!

Have a safe and awesome Halloween weekend!

Nursing Job Fair 2009...Great Success and Silver Screen Songs

NOTE: ARNEC classes on Thursday, October 29 have been canceled. Please check ANGEL for your assignment.

Well, it's yet another rainy morning in Morrilton, and today's rain has caused at least one casualty (event casualty, that is). The Timberwolf 5k Race has been postponed AGAIN until Thursday, November 19 during x-period. You'll still get your t-shirt on race day and (hopefully) won't fall down in the mud.

Now a bit of news on the recent nursing fair...On October 22, numerous employers and over 50 UACCM nursing students braved the monsoon weather conditions for the Fall 2009 Nursing Job Fair. The employers represented a broad spectrum of health-care providers, including nursing homes, AR Department of Health, hospitals, clinics, Conway Human Development Center and the AR Department of Human Services.

Students gathered information about available positions, met with human resource coordinators, networked various contacts, and got freebies and door prizes. Don’t miss the next UACCM Job Fair. It will encompass all areas of study and is scheduled for April 1, 2010.

Finally...don't forget about the UACCM Choir's "Songs from the Silver Screen" concert coming up this evening at 7:00 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Stop by this FREE concert and enjoy the sounds of a large collection of Hollywood favorites.

Spring Break in London

Even though the weather is just turning colder, it's not too early to start thinking about spring break 2010! Even though droves of college students head to the beach each year in late March to celebrate their weeklong freedom from papers, quizzes, and tests, it's not for everybody. If sightseeing tours, high-speed trains, and the worry-free feeling of a completely guided tour sounds better to you, then you're in luck. A group from UACCM will be traveling to beautiful and historic London in late March 2010.

The trip will include 5 overnight hotel stays, European breakfast and dinner daily, two sightseeing tours, 1 walking tour, and a full-time tour director. If this sounds good, come by Room 112 in the Fine Arts Building this Thursday, October 29 at 6:30 pm to find out more.

You don't have to sign up at the meeting (but you can if you want), and you will learn more about travel locations during the tour, pricing, and payment options. For more info, contact Tina Lake at lake@uaccm.edu or go to www.eftours.com/enroll.

Fazal Syed is out today, and his night classes are canceled.

UACCM Races for the Cure

Over 45,000 women (and a few men) formed a massive sea of pink at the 2009 Arkansas Race for the Cure on Saturday, October 17. With the theme “It’s MY RACE to Win!”, 12 UACCM participants braved chilly weather for the 5K Walk/Run. Those proudly representing UACCM were: Lynn R. Baker, Jordan Bradford, Sandra Cone, April Hudson, Jaci Livingston, Kira Livingston, Shauna Severns, Tiffany Sutton, Faith Wilson, Lauren Wilson & Randi Zakrzewski.

Thanks to all who supported the Race team. You may continue to contribute to the Race for the Cure Agency Account with cash or check. And if you missed ordering your t-shirt, some are still available at the UACCM University Bookstore.

Fall Fest for Free Wednesday

Well, it's officially fall, and that means it's time for the first UACCM Fall Fest! The best part of it all is that...it's FREE!

Tattoos, Caps and Gowns, PTK and Harry Potter

Good morning. First of all, IT'S FRIDAY! Secondly, here are a few things you should probably take a look at:

Monday, October 26th will bring a couple of important things to UACCM. First, Monday is the deadline to submit cap and gown orders for December graduation, so if you plan on walking down that aisle in a couple of months (for graduation purposes, that is) be sure to stop by the University Bookstore asap to submit your order. Remember: there is now NO FEE for graduation, so what've you got to lose? Monday will also bring "Totally Tattoos" to Union Station in the Kirk Building. The Student Government Association is sponsoring this event, which will let all students receive a FREE tattoo of their choice. Note: If you have a phobia of needles, don't worry-they're airbrushed. So drop in Union Station between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm to get inked for free.

Receive an invitation to join Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)? If you did, be sure to attend an informational meeting on the club on either November 4 or 5 at noon in Room 102 in the Library Complex. Hint: if you got an invitation into this honor society, it's probably a good idea to go ahead and join...great times and good resume' builder! If you want more information on PTK, contact Tom Mcleod at mcleod@uaccm.edu, Laura Engleman at engleman@uaccm.edu, or Michael Moses at moses.michael@uaccm.edu.

We're a week away from the final Starlight Cinema FREE outdoor movie night of the season! Next Friday, students, faculty, staff, and the community are invited to load up chairs and blankets and head out to see "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" on UACCM's outdoor movie screen. The movie will begin at approximately 6:25 pm and is totally free to attend. Concessions (including hot chocolate) will be available for purchase. Hope to see you there!

Have an awesome weekend!

Help Heal the World...one Vitamin at a Time

The UACCM Arts Alliance Club is conducting a vitamin-drive on campus that will extend throughout the semester. The club urges everyone to consider donating a bottle of vitamin/mineral supplements, which will be donated to a group of area medical professionals who are planning to provide medical care and supplies to children in the Boca Costa de Solola area of Southwestern Guatemala. The UACCM Arts Alliance Club will also be involved in a Silent Art Auction and dinner in Conway to raise additional funds for this group of children who is desperately in need. Drop boxes will be available on both sides of campus in the Fine Arts Building, the Earl Love Child Study Center, and the Kirk Building (Nursing).

UACCM's efforts will aid the group from Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church in Conway in their medical mission. For more information, contact Tina Lake at (501) 977-2076 or at lake@uaccm.edu.

Thanks for supporting the cause!

Time for More Money!

Here's a note from the UACCM Financial Aid Office:

For students expecting a 2nd disbursement on your Fall semester only loans, we anticipate those refund checks being available by Friday, October 16th by 2:00 pm. Due to the Columbus Day holiday, we have experienced some delays in receiving all the funds. Additionally, if your lender is Sallie Mae, your refund most likely will not be available on that day.

If you do not have classes scheduled for that day, please check with our office or student accounts to make sure the refund checks are ready prior to making a trip to our campus to pick up a refund.

Remember you must have your UACCM ID to pick up your refund at the Student Accounts window in the University Center.

Don't forget about "Just Desserts" tonight in The Plaza. Go to www.uaccm.edu/JD09 for more info.

Donate Canned Fruit and Help Those in Need

Did you know that over 12 million American children are at risk of going to bed hungry tonight?
Did you know that last year the Conway County Care Center served 2,372 households and 4,681 individuals?
Did you know that the Conway County Care Center sells none of the food that they receive? They give it all to people in need!
Did you know that there are over 2,400 students, faculty, staff and adjunct faculty at UACCM?
Did you know that if every person at UACCM donated only 25 cents, we would be able to reach our goal and purchase 500 cans of fruit?

The Conway County Care Center in Morrilton has challenged UACCM faculty, staff and students to gather a minimum of 500 cans of fruit to help re-stock their food pantry this season. Drop-off bins for canned fruit can be found in the UC, BTC and Kirk buildings. If you wish to help but don’t have the time to shop for canned fruit, please bring your monetary donation by the information desk in the UC and we will purchase it for you.

We have until the end of October to meet the challenge, so let’s do our part and give to those in need. Thanks for donating!

Want a Bachelor's Degree? Here's Your Chance!

Here's a reminder about something going on tonight on campus:

UACCM has partnered with the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith to offer three new degree programs via online courses and compressed video. A UA-Fort Smith representative will be on the UACCM campus tonight (Tuesday, October 13) at 6:00 p.m. to share more information about these unique degree opportunities. The information session will be in the Koontz Room (Room 203) of the Business Office Technology building.

UACCM...where the information flows (more) freely

Good news, UACCM! The college has recently added additional wireless access points on campus. Currently, wireless internet access is available in the Library Complex, Business Technology Center and portions of the Kirk building including the new Union Station Student Center. These areas allow you to connect to the internet with your personal laptop using your wireless card.

Remember: laptops can only be used for wireless connection on campus and you are still under the UACCM Computer Usage Policy when using your laptop. The wireless access is intended for UACCM student use only and is only available during normal operating hours of the campus. Wireless access is not available at night (when classes are not in session) nor is it available on weekends.

Finally, if you want to check out a laptop to use in the new Library Complex, they are availabkle. This allows students to go into a quiet area of the library and use a laptop for study or research. These laptops also contain the latest version of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.) Note: you will need your driver's license in order to check out a laptop, and the laptops cannot be taken outside of the library (we would hate for that embarassing alarm to go off!)

Hopefully, wireless access will continue to expand across campus in the future!

Got a Sweet Tooth? Calling all dessert-aholics!

Attention all chocoholics, candy fanatics, and sugary-goodness fiends! The eighth annual “Just Desserts” fundraiser for the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton Foundation is coming up! The event will be held from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 15 in the UACCM Plaza, courtyard and pavilion.

“Just Desserts” features all-you-can-eat desserts donated by area bakeries and restaurants, as well as UACCM faculty, staff, and Foundation Board members. There will also be a gourmet coffee bar, a sugar-free dessert bar, and savory snacks including Petit Jean meat and cheese trays, assorted crackers and other appetizers. Additionally, there will be entertainment by the UACCM Choir and door prizes throughout the evening.

The event will include a live auction featuring items donated by local businesses and individuals, as well as silent and chance auctions. During the “One Sweet Deal” chance auction, tickets can be purchased for $1 each and placed into a drop box by each auction item. Beginning at 7:30, one winning ticket will be drawn for each item. Remaining dessert items will be auctioned at 7:45 p.m.

Tickets to the event are $8.00 for adults, $3.00 for ages six to twelve, and free for children five and under and can be purchased at the door.

Proceeds from this year’s event will be applied toward a general campus improvement fund which will be utilized to purchase signage and fund other campus beautification projects. During the past seven years, the event has raised approximately $37,000, resulting in the purchases of a baby grand piano, audio and video equipment, a large outdoor tent for special events, and the UACCM Pavilion. The Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, which makes contributions from businesses and individuals tax-deductible within the limits of the law.

We hope to see you for this sweeeeeeeeet fundraising event!
