Canned Food Drive Wraps Up

UACCM recently participated in the Conway County Care Center's annual holiday food drive, collecting nearly 1000 cans of fruit and other non-perishable food items. The items donated by students, faculty, and staff members in support of teams which were headed by both faculty and staff members. The faculty-led team collected the most cans, with the staff team captains getting "creamed" for their losing efforts. Thanks to all who donated and made this a success! As part of the incentive (bribe) to gain donations for the staff team, it was promised that all donors to the staff team would be listed here on the blog...so here they are:
  • Nathan Crook, Kristi Strain, Clara Paquette, Mary Lou McCrotty, Debbie Maxwell, Josh Markham, Linda Stanley, Leroy Gattin, Lorraine Brown, Sandy McDonald, UC–anonymous faculty members, BTC–anonymous faculty member, James Eddy, Pam Brownlee, Janie Wagner, Jacob Ward, Trevor Mize, Mary Clark, Wendy Meaders, Tramayne Webster, Mary Newsome, Jennifer Warren, Gina Guess-Welsh, Stacy Stracner, Melinda Hardiman, Kira Livingston, Aaron Spivey, Rachel Mullins, and Darren Jones.
The Conway County Care Center continues to accept donations of non-perishable food items to help stock their food pantry for the holiday season.

Happy Thanksgiving from UACCM!

Choir Members Excel at Competition...Prepare for Free Concert

Kudos for the Choir

Three members of the UACCM choir recently competed in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Regional Conference held at Harding University in Searcy. UACCM choir members Jackson Flowers, Aubrey Hoult, and Kendra Thomas all made it into the semi-final round of the event, competing against music majors from colleges and universities in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Contestants prepared three classical songs and performed in front of a panel of judges made up of college-level music instructors, finishing in the top four performers in their category, which allowed them to advance to the semi-final round.

According to UACCM Vocal/Choral Music Instructor Shannah Cummings, “In regional competition, making it to the semi-final round is a definite accomplishment. I am extremely proud of the students and their accomplishments in this endeavor.”

Flowers, Hoult, and Thomas are three of the choir members who will perform in the upcoming holiday concert at UACCM. Scheduled for Sunday, December 6, the concert will feature a mixture of timeless Christmas carols, modern day holiday tunes, and more to get the audience into the spirit of the season. The concert will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium and is open to the public with free admission. For more information on the concert, contact Shannah Cummings at (501) 977-2198 or at cummings@uaccm.edu.

Finals are near...Where to study?

Finals are just around the corner, and you may be wondering "Where can I get some studying done around here?" Here's a message from UACCM Vice Chancellor for Academic Services Diana Arn:

As we near the end of the Fall 2009 Semester, I want to remind you of the study areas available to you around campus:

THE E. ALLEN GORDON LIBRARY: Quiet study space is available in the Gordon Library which is located in the west wing of the LIBRARY COMPLEX. The Gordon Library also has group study rooms available which may be reserved through the library staff. Computers are also available in this area.

You also received an email from our Librarian Leroy Gattin regarding extended hours in December. The E. Allen Gordon Library will extend its hours prior to Finals Week in December. The Library will be open on Saturday, December 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 6 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY CENTER: A study/vending area is located on the upper level of the BTC. Wireless computer access is available in that study area.

UNIVERSITY CENTER: A study lounge is available on the upper level of the University Center and vending is available in the hallway.

UNION STATION: Located in the west wing of the KIRK BUILDING, Union Station is a multi-use student center (television, table tennis, SGA, intramurals, fitness room, and many other activities), but is a good place to study for those who are not bothered by the noise. Union Station has wireless computer access. If you desire a quieter area to study you should use the areas made available for that purpose at the Gordon Library, Business Technology Center, and University Center.

Good luck on your final weeks of the semester!

Luminaries Lead the Way to S-a-n-t-a

UACCM invites the public to attend the seventh annual “Night of Luminaries” from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, December 3, 2009 following the Morrilton Christmas Parade. The free community event features nearly 2000 candle-lit paper bags which illuminate the drive through campus and lead patrons to Santa himself, who will be ready to greet children in the Plaza Courtyard following his duties in the parade.

The white luminary paper bags spread across campus have been hand-decorated by students enrolled in Conway County elementary schools including Morrilton Primary, Morrilton Elementary, Morrilton Intermediate, Wonderview, Nemo Vista, Sacred Heart schools, Morrilton Junior High, and the Center for Exceptional Children.

Individuals attending the “Night of Luminaries” should enter campus through the Bruce Street entrance on the east end of the college property. The route will take vehicles behind the Kirk Building before passing the Science Building, and the route will continue west past the Fine Arts Building and Library Complex to the UACCM Plaza where visitors may stop for refreshments of cider, cocoa, and cookies. Santa Claus will be attending the event again this year and each child will receive a gift. After meeting Santa, guests are asked to exit campus through the new University Boulevard entrance on the far west end of campus.

The event will also include a holiday music preview performed by the UACCM Choir in preparation for their annual holiday concert on Sunday afternoon, December 6 at 2:30 p.m. in the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium. The free concert will feature a mixture of favorite well-known carol classics and modern renditions of holiday favorites the whole family will enjoy along with Christmas cookies, hot cocoa, and other treats. The choir providing this free concert is made up of UACCM students and is under the direction of Shannah Cummings.

All are invited to attend these free family-oriented and fun-filled events to help ring in the holiday season. For more information on either event, contact Jacob Ward at (501) 977-2142 or at ward@uaccm.edu.

Kick butts, run your butts off, and study your butts off

Kick butts!
It's Thursday! Ok, so it's not as exciting as Friday, but we're getting close. You can almost smell the weekend from here. Speaking of smelling, did you know that UACCM is a tobacco free campus? Judging by the number of students I see trekking off campus to light up every day, I would say that you probably do. If you would like to kick the habit (and save yourself some walking), stop by the Library Complex Lobby today from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm to speak with a specialist about smoking cessation. She will have information on how you can quit, why you should quit, resources to help you, and more.

Attention runners! The Timberwolf 5K is finally going to happen today. If you want to participate, you can still sign up! Just meet at Union Station in the Kirk Building at 12:05 pm today (race starts at 12:15). Everyone gets a free t-shirt, and prizes will be given in both running and walking categories for males and females.

Don't panic, but final exams are only a few weeks away! If you've fallen a bit behind, or if you need to finish up a few projects, the E. Allen Gordon Library will have extended hours. The Library will be open on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm and Sunday, December 6 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. If you need a quiet place to study, come on by. There are even study rooms available for small groups, so if you have a few friends who are in the same boat as you, get together and break out the books.

Kick Butts and Bring your Fruit Tomorrow!

Each year thousands of smokers quit for good. This is YOUR year!

Tomorrow marks the 34th anniversary of the "Great American Smoke Out," and UACCM will celecrate the occasion by bringing Dianne Holland, the Conway County Tobacco Prevention Specialist, to campus from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm in the Library Complex Lobby. She will provide smoking cessation information to anyone who stops by. She's bringing door prizes, too, so be sure to stop by and sign up!

Bring your fruit and watch somebody get creamed!

Even though economic times are tough, the holidays are (almost) upon us, and our annual canned fruit drive for the Conway County Care Center has fallen short of our goal! Some brave UACCM faculty and staff members (see teams below) will risk getting "creamed” to help someone in need. Bring your canned fruit tomorrow to donate to either the faculty or staff team listed below. The official count will be held at 3:00 pm tomorrow, and the losing team will get "creamed" with a pie to the face by the winners in the circle drive in front of the University Center.

•Karen Caig
•Jim Harris

Find out how to help heal the world tomorrow

Have you ever felt the urge to help those in need through a mission trip? St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Conway is sponsoring a March 2010 medical mission to Guatemala in Central America to serve the medical needs of the Mayan community over the course of 10 days. An informational session for anyone interested in participating will be held tomorrow at 12:10 pm in Room 214 of the University Center.

During the mission trip, participants will travel to Boca Costa de Solala Medical Clinic in Southwestern Guatemala, where a shortage of medical supplies and medical professionals has led to the highest levels of infant and maternal mortality rates in the country. Medical professionals as well as general volunteers are encouraged to participate in the mission trip. UACCM is also currently accepting bottles of vitamins which will be sent to Guatemala and distributed during the mission trip. If you are interested in donating to this cause, contact Tina Lake at lake@uaccm.edu or at (501) 977-2076.

For more information on how you can get involved with the mission trip, contact Marianne at welch851@aol.com.

It's Time to Stuff the Sleigh and Help Plan Some Events!

Happy Friday, UACCM. Here are a couple of things to think about over the weekend.

It's (almost) the official "season of giving," and to contribute to the giving spirit, UACCM's Student Government Association is participating in Little Rock Channel 11's "Stuff the Sleigh." This community service event aims to give every foster child in Arkansas a new toy for Christmas...that's over 5,000 kids! A few SGA students will be on Channel 11's Morning Show on Monday morning to talk about the event. If you want to see it, you'll have to get up early! The show runs from 5:00 to 7:00 (yes, that's a.m.)!

The event will begin Monday and will end on Friday, December 4. During the event, you can bring your new, unwrapped toys by the "Pod" which will be located on campus (exact location coming soon) or by the SGA Office in Union Station. The event will also include a "Deck the Pod" contest, and we'll have more on that soon, so keep your eyes peeled and let's help "Stuff the Sleigh!"

Want to help plan campus special events? Stop by the fall planning meeting on Tuesday, November 17 at x-period in the SGA Office in Union Station. Anyone wanting to help plan the rest of the fall events and get started on the upcoming spring semester are welcome to attend.

Have a good weekend!

Students and Employees Win Big

Art Scholarships Awarded
Two UACCM students were recently awarded scholarships to attend four-day “Art Escapes” workshops offered through the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute of the University of Arkansas System (WRI). Sarah Conine and Wesley Montgomery, both of Conway, were awarded the scholarships based on recommendations they received from UACCM Fine Arts Instructor Tina Lake. The scholarships hold a value of up to $320 each.

During “Art Escapes,” the students refreshed their creative spirit and enriched their artistic skills by participating in workshops taught by working artists, including 16 hours of instruction, assistance from the artist, and critique. The workshops were held November 5 through 8 at WRI on Petit Jean Mountain. Conine and Montgomery are currently pursuing associate of arts degrees in general education with programs of study in art. Upon graduation from UACCM, both students plan to transfer to the University of Central Arkansas to pursue bachelor’s degrees in art.

Employees, Publications Win at Conference

UACCM Director of Public Relations and Marketing Mary Clark and Program Coordinator for Information and Public Relations Jacob Ward, both of Russellville, recently attended the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) District IV regional conference in San Antonio, Texas. During the conference luncheon, Mary Clark was presented the award as the 2009 NCMPR District IV Communicator of the Year. One of the most celebrated awards given to an NCMPR member, the Communicator of the Year Award honors a two-year college marketing professional who has demonstrated special leadership and ability in college communications. It is awarded annually in each of NCMPR's seven districts, and district recipients automatically become a nominee for the national award, which is presented at the national conference.

Clark said, “I’m humbled and honored to receive this award from an organization whose members I deeply admire and respect. NCMPR has been one of the greatest professional resources I have had throughout my career. I want to also express my gratitude to my UACCM colleagues Trevor Mize, Jacob Ward, and Kristi Strain for their invaluable support and assistance.”

During the conference awards ceremony, UACCM received the Silver Medallion for Web Site Design and the Bronze Medallion for Social Marketing. Ward was also presented a $500 scholarship to help defray conference costs during the ceremony. There were 371 entries in the Medallion Awards competition this year from the approximately 100 member colleges in District IV, which includes Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming.

Pop Stars, Horseshoes, and W's

Good morning, UACCM. No class cancelations today, but here are a few things coming your way:
  • "American Pop Stars" will be on campus today from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm in Union Station in the Kirk Building. If you've ever wanted to make your own music video or even appear in a video with your favorite artist, you won't want to miss it. The best part of it all is that it's FREE and is being sponsored by your Student Government Association.
  • While you're in Union Station, pick up an intramural horseshoes registration form and fill it out. You can sign up as either a single or a double. Just remember, 'almost' does count in horseshoes.
  • Today is the last day to drop a class with a "w." If you have a class that you think you need to drop, be sure to do it today. If you don't you run the risk of receiving a low grade on your transcript, which is never a good thing! Also, remember that you must officially drop a class to receive a "w"-just because you stop attending a class does NOT mean that you have dropped it. See your advisor today or stop by the Registrar's Office on the second floor of the University Center if you have any questions.
Just something to keep on your mind for later this week..the Little Rock Wind Symphony will be on campus this Thursday to present "Diversions" featuring classic pieces by Mozart and Mendelssohn. Ask your instructor if you are able to receive bonus points for attending the event, which will begin at 7:00 pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

Have a good one!

The program will feature more than an hour of music including selections from Leoš Janáček and Charles Gounod in addition to Felix Mendelssohn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed by a 13-member group of musicians using flutes, clarinets, bassoons, oboes, bass clarinets, horns, tubas, and trumpets. LRWS was founded in 1992 to recognize the diverse heritage of the wind band tradition in Arkansas. It is dedicated to the performance of wind music, including a variety of compositions and transcriptions for wind band which challenge the players, inspire audiences, and affirm the wind band as a classical artistic medium. Five concerts are performed annually in Little Rock, and the orchestra has performed statewide. The LRWS Chamber Players ensemble was organized in early 2009 to offer audiences the opportunity to experience LRWS in intimate locations. LRWS is an independent, nonprofit organization and is under the direction of Dr. Karen Fannin.

Dr. Fannin has been music director of LRWS since 2006 and is also director of bands and assistant professor of music at Hendrix College, where she conducts the wind ensemble and teaches conducting, low brass, and courses in twentieth-century music and fundamentals of music. In 2008, she founded the Festival of Winds Honor Band for high school musicians held at Hendrix College each May. Fannin holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting and Literature from the University of Colorado, a Master of Music in Conducting from Northwestern University, and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Northern Iowa.

The culture-rich concert promises to be an event which the entire family will enjoy. For more information, contact Jacob Ward at ward@uaccm.edu or at (501) 977-2142.

"Just Desserts" Raises a Sweeeeet Amount of Money

As its name suggests, the eighth annual “Just Desserts” fundraiser for the UACCM Foundation featured a huge variety of savory desserts for guests while also raising funds to help support the college. The event was held on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at the UACCM Plaza, and preliminary numbers show that the event raised approximately $5,000 in net profit.

Fennell Purifoy Architects, Koontz Electric, Mobley Construction, Petit Jean Meats, and Southwestern Energy Company were Chancellor’s Club sponsors for the event, donating $500 each. Nathan and Betty Crook, Petit Jean State Bank, Regions Bank of Morrilton, and Virco, Inc. were Ambassador’s Club sponsors donating $250 to the event. Starbucks of Oak Street in Conway served as beverage sponsor for the event, and other donors included AMI Engineering, Inc., Arvest Bank of Morrilton, Benchmark Title, Central Arkansas Dust Control, Inc., Innerplan Office Interiors, Johnson and Ruff CPAs, and Steve and Rhonda Trowbridge.

Proceeds from this year’s event will be applied toward the completion of UACCM’s Union Square project, which will serve as an outdoor park area on campus featuring green space, landscaping, benches, a basketball court, and more to be utilized by UACCM students.
