SEVERE WEATHER POLICY

In the event that the weather is so severe that the College administration feels that life and property may be in danger, the administration may cancel classes until weather conditions improve. After a decision is made, the administration will call and report the closing to KATV, Channel 7, KTHV, Channel 11, KARK, Channel 4, and to radio station KVOM, Morrilton (dial 800 AM, 101.7 FM). Information will be posted on here on The Campus Link Blog, on Facebook, and on Twitter. Students should exercise judgment for personal safety regardless of College announcements as there is no way the administration can review road conditions throughout the College’s service area.

Need a job? The United States Census Bureau is currently hiring workers to assist with collecting census data for the 2010 census. The positions offer good pay ($12.75/hour), flexible hours, and paid training. Plus, census information is being collected everywhere, so this will allow you to work close to home!

UACCM Library Celebrates Black History Month

Here's a note from UACCM Librarian Leroy Gattin regarding the library's celebration of Black History Month:

The E. Allen Gordon Library will celebrate Black History Month during the month of February.  American’s have recognized black history annually since 1926, first as “Negro History Week” and later as “Black History Month.”  What you might not know is that black history had barely begun to be studied, or even documented, when the tradition originated.  Although blacks have been in American at least as far back as colonial times, it was not until the twentieth century that they gained a respectable presence in history books.

We owe the celebration of Black History Month and the study of black history to Dr. Carter G. Woodson.  Born to parents who were former slaves, he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at the age of twenty.  He graduated within two years, and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard.  The scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American population-and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time.

Woodson chose the second week of February for Negro History Week because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the black American population, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.  However a number of important events in black history occurred in February.  They include:  passage of the fifteenth amendment granting blacks the right to vote and the formation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in New York in 1909.

The library will have a display of books dealing with famous black Americans and book marks dealing with black history.  We will also have posters displayed dealing with black Americans who have made great contributions to American History.  Please come by the library during February and browse these materials.

Tuesday, January 26 Class Change and Cancelations

Here's one class change for today: Lewis Hunt’s A&P II class will begin today at 10:50 am instead of the regular 9:25 am start time for the class, so sleep in if you can! Here are a few class cancelations:

Off to The Orient: February 8 is the Deadline!

“The sunset over Cape Sounion on the west coast of Greece is not orange or amber but blocked mostly from view by the sea’s windswept clouds. The light that does escape is golden and cuts through the gray sky to illuminate patches of sea. The resulting coins of light are alive with texture and movement,” writes UACCM English instructor, Lyndsey Daniel. “The sight is beautiful by any standard, but viewed from an ancient temple to Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, with the solemn columns and the wind in my hair, the sight is…well….
‘I had a moment, Ms. Daniel.’

I look over the back of my seat in our magenta motor coach. My petite student hasn’t lifted her head from her sketch pad. ‘What do you mean you had a moment?’ I ask.

‘I just had a moment,’ is her only reply, head down, long hair tangled from the sea air and hiding her sketch pad. I don’t ask her to clarify again for a couple of reasons. First, I’m her English teacher, and she deserves a break from my constant insistence on specificity. Second, I know what she means anyway.”

Travelling with a group of college students is probably the best-kept secret around. If your idea of a vacation is to lie around on the beach all day or play golf, then student travel is not for you. However, if you love the adventure of learning about the world and its people up close—and don’t care if you have silk sheets and room service—you can travel with a student group no matter what age you are.

“I prefer to travel with students,” says Karen Caig, another UACCM instructor. “First, it’s cheap. I’ve priced group tours before, and nothing comes close to the price of a student tour with companies like EF Tours, the oldest, or Explorica, a newer company that specializes in student travel. Also, I like traveling with student companies who have to answer to high school student parents (even though we lead college tours) and have stringent safety standards. They provide bilingual guides who travel with the group constantly and monitor any volatile situations so they can change the itinerary if necessary. Of course, you have to be flexible, but to me that is part of the fun of travel. That’s the adventure.

“Finally, I prefer to travel with students because their vitality is contagious. On our last tour in Greece, we had a Franciscan nun from Texas, Sister Jo, in our group. She was in her seventies and had a couple from her church in their early sixties with her. They all agreed that travelling with students keeps people young. Sister Jo said that even returning to a country she has visited before is exciting with a new group of young people.”

International travel can be frightening (especially the first time) and expensive, but going with a group of students allows travelers to have more pocket change, more security, and maybe even a few “moments” of their own.

"Union Station Presents": YOU! (maybe)

Happy Friday, UACCM. Are you a fan of American Idol, America's Got Talent, etc.? Here's your chance to show off your skills (on a slightly smaller scale) in a new program: Union Station Presents! Sponsored by your Student Government Association, Union Station Presents will give UACCM students with talents in singing, playing instruments, or poetry and bands the opportunity to own the stage at the Union Station student center a few times each month. But there's one catch: you have to audition first! 

What...did you think we would let just anyone up on stage? Not a chance! Auditions will be held, American Idol  style, on Wednesday, January 27 and Thursday, January 28 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in Union Station in the Kirk Building. Governor Beebe expands Arkansas Works Initiative-encourages college

Governor Mike Beebe announced recently the second expansion of Arkansas Works, the governor’s strategic initiative to coordinate education, training and economic development in Arkansas communities. The new initiative is an expansion of features found in the Arkansas College and Career Planning System, and includes a pilot program that has hired and placed 43 full-time College and Career Coaches in 21 of Arkansas’s most economically challenged counties.

The online resources will enable Arkansas students to become more proactive in planning their future education and career success beyond high school. Students, their parents/guardians, and educators can use the system from wherever they have computer access – school, the library, workforce centers or home. Designed to guide students through the career planning process, the system opens the door for career awareness, college and career exploration, and supports preparation for enrollment and transition into postsecondary education and the world of work.

“Today we are announcing an expanded online system that will provide all high school students with information about career opportunities in our state, and the education required to be successful in career opportunities that await them,” Beebe said. “If we are successful in getting students engaged and excited about developing a strategic plan for their future, great things will happen for them, and for Arkansas.”

Employed by Arkansas community colleges, the College and Career Coaches will work directly in the high schools, alongside guidance counselors, to help advise and prepare students for career exploration, college planning and enrollment. They began their work on January 4.“With our expanded college scholarship programs, coupled with the Arkansas Universal Scholarship Application, Arkansas is chipping away at the barriers to higher education enrollment,” said Beebe. “Our timing is right as more than 60% of America’s fastest growing jobs require a postsecondary degree. Students must understand that only 8% growth will occur in jobs that only require a high school diploma.”

States like Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia have been using the internet-based system with great success. Data from these states indicate significant gains in enrollment in postsecondary institutions and completion of higher education degrees. The College and Career Planning System can be accessed by all Arkansans at http://www.arworks.arkansas.gov or by calling 1-866-ARWORKS (1-866-279-6757). Participants must visit a Workforce Development Center to receive login information.

A New Scholarship and MAGIC

Looking for a way to pay your spring tuition? Here are a couple of new scholarships that will go to two UACCM students. Check with the UACCM Financial Aid Office in the University Center for more information.
The UACCM Financial Aid Office is currently accepting applications for the Literary Coterie Scholarship. Two scholarships will be awarded for $500 each for the spring 2010 semester to UACCM students. Deadline to apply is February 15, 2010.

Applicants must meet the following criteria to apply: 

• must be a Conway County resident
• must be enrolled full-time for the spring 2010 semester
• must have a 3.00 cumulative GPA or better
• not a prior recipient of this scholarship

The scholarship only covers tuition, fees, and books. Applicants need to complete a UACCM Scholarship Application and write in Literary Coterie as the scholarship being applied for and return it to the Financial Aid Office by February 15.

Last Day to Charge Books & an Intramural Reminder

Still want to charge textbooks to your financial aid? Tomorrow (Wednesday) is the last day to make charges to financial aid at the University Bookstore. Students are allowed two charges during the two-week charge period, so if you have only charged once thus far, you may charge a second time by 5:00 pm tomorrow. If you have charged twice and the University Bookstore did not have a book you needed in stock at the time of your second charge, please let a bookstore staffer know when you come in.

Reminder: If you are interested in playing intramural billiards or 5-on-5 basketball, you need to sign up ASAP! Billiards play begins tomorrow (Wednesday) and 5-on-5 starts on January 26. Forms are available at Union Station for interested students. Not into billiards of bball? Other events this semester will include ultimate frisbee, quickball, kickball. 4-on-4 flag football, NCAA bracketology, and 4-on-4 soccer, so watch for more information on these throughout the next few months. Support the Arts. Heal the World.

Addicted to art and want to help heal the world? If so, mark your calendars for Saturday, January 23 for the St. Peter's Art Exhibition and Silent Auction. The event will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at 925 Mitchell in Conway and will feature artwork, memorabilia, sculpture, and more. It will also include appetizers, live music, and a silent auction. Featured in the exhibit will be several pieces of artwork created by UACCM Art Instructor Tina Lake.

Tickets for the event are $25 per person, and all proceeds from the event will support a March medical mission trip to Guatemala. During the mission trip, participants will travel to Boca Costa de Solala Medical Clinic in Southwestern Guatemala, where a shortage of medical supplies and medical professionals has led to the highest levels of infant and maternal mortality rates in the country.

Don't miss this opportunity to experience the arts and help people in need! Interested in going on the mission trip? Medical professionals as well as general volunteers are encouraged to participate in the mission trip. UACCM is also currently accepting bottles of vitamins which will be sent to Guatemala and distributed during the mission trip. G'morning! Here are a couple of things we have for you today:

The UACCM Student Government Association (SGA) invites all students to a Meet & Greet today during x-period (that's 12:05-12:55 pm for you newbies) in the Kirk Building's Union Station Student Center. New students should stop by and say hello and returning students need to come and say "Hey!" to all students new and not-so-new. Students interested in becoming a SGA senate member also need to stop by and check out what it's all about.

Who wants a CHEAP oil change? Cogswell Motors on Hwy. 9b here in Morrilton (right next to the University Bookstore) is offering oil changes/filter service/27 point inspection to UACCM students and employees for only $14.95 through March 31! They'll even let you drop off your car and will bring you to/pick you up from campus! All you need to do is show your UACCM I.D. to get this deal. Preparing to write your first college paper and need some help? Brushing up on your writing skills and want to learn about MLA format? The UACCM Student Success Lab staff will conduct a MLA formatting workshop to help interested students understand writing papers in MLA format. The workshops will be held in Room 108 of the Business Technology Center at the following dates/times:

Good morning, UACCM. Today kicks off the spring semester, and we thought we would give you a few things that might make your transition to UACCM a little easier. If your instructor is sick or if they can't make it for any other reason, we'll let you know, so be sure to check the blog before you drag yourself out of bed and drive to campus!

For magic lovers and anyone looking for some free, family-friendly excitement, check out this event coming up next week:
Ready to venture into 2010 with a journey through the history of magic, including tales of past magicians and magic shows? Want to experience the wonders of Vaudeville, sideshows, con-men, and ghost stories played out with ornate props and a beautiful stage set? “Smoke and Mirrors,” an illusion magic show performed by Rocky and Lori Clements of Jonesboro, will return to UACCM on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at noon and 7:00 p.m. in the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium. Sponsored by the college, each performance will be a free, all-ages production open to the community, and will feature magic, music, audience participation, comedy, and special effects.

“Smoke and Mirrors” is the largest touring magic show in Arkansas and the mid-south region of the United States, making appearances at approximately 50 venues each year including theaters, festivals, college campuses, and corporate events. The show involves more than $50,000 worth of equipment used to produce state-of-the-art illusions in addition to classic effects performed over the last 100 years by many of the legends of magic. The production promises to appeal to young and old alike, and will offer an artistic alternative for those looking for something outside the usual forms of entertainment.

No tickets are required, but seating is limited for this popular event and will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. We hope to see you there!

the semester begins Wednesday...how about some free money?

Good morning, UACCM! New student orientation is currently underway here on campus, and we are gearing up for another record-breaking semester! Classes begin on Wednesday, but if you haven't made it to register yet, you can still attend late registration this Wednesday, January 13 and Thursday, January 14. Don't forget: you will need to pay a $25 late registration fee on these days.

Enrolled in a science class at UACCM that meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays? If so, remember that your first class will be held this Wednesday, January 13. Campus Connect incorrectly states that the classes will begin this Friday.  

Now how about some free money for upcoming semesters? You've heard about the Arkansas Lottery and Challenge Scholarships, so read on to find out how to apply for them:

Apply now for AR Challenge/Lottery Scholarship at http://www.adhe.edu/, then go to the YOUniversal application and complete your information. This application is for all state scholarship programs (excluding the Governor’s Distinguished Program).

Eligibility Requirements for Nontraditional Students
An applicant must:

• Be an Arkansas resident and US citizen/lawful permanent resident
• Be accepted for admission at an approved institution of higher education as a full-time or part-time student in a program of study that leads to a baccalaureate degree, associate degree, qualified certificate or a nursing school diploma
• Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
• Meet one of the following criteria:

1. Must have graduated from an Arkansas high school and achieved at least a 2.5 high school grade point average or had a minimum composite score of 19 on the ACT or the equivalent score on an ACT equivalent; or
2. Has completed at least twelve (12) semester hours of courses granting 3 or more hours of credit at an approved institution of higher education and earned a postsecondary grade point average of at least 2.5

Application Deadline Date

Application deadlines for nontraditional students are June 1 for applicants enrolling the fall term and November 1 for applicants enrolling in the spring term. Scholarships will be awarded beginning with the fall 2010 semester.

At this time, award amounts for the Academic Challenge Scholarship have not yet been determined. The amount will be determined by scholarship lottery proceeds and the Arkansas State General Assembly. Award amounts are expected to be announced in February 2010.
