"What the heck is Quickball?!?"

The next intramural sports event on the schedule is Quickball. Rosters are now available to sign up for this exciting game and the deadline to sign up is fast-approaching on February 23 (play will begin on March 1). Now you might be thinking "What the heck is Quickball?" Read on to find out.

Quickball is “Quick Baseball,” a national baseball enhancement program that was created in 1996 and is now the official grass roots program of Cal Ripken Baseball. Quickball has developed into one of the fastest-growing recreational baseball programs and is currently being played by thousands of students on college campuses throughout the country. Through all of its growth, the mission of all Quickball programs and game equipment has remained the same – make baseball more fun and easier to play, regardless of one's skill level. Quickball includes a wide range of challenging baseball games that can be played by as few as two or as many as 30 people. Team rules systems range from the ultra-competitive 4-on-4 Fast Pitch to the novice-friendly Diamond Derby™. All Quickball rules emphasize fast-paced play and non-stop action on the diamond. If you participate in intramural Quickball, you'll have the opportunity to learn why it's considered America’s favorite fastime!

About the Games...

They're simple and fun. The important thing to remember as you participate in Quickball activities is to just have fun and play ball! For more information about Quickball games, official rules, etc., visit www.quickball.com or stop by Union Station and speak with Kelley Roach.

Take a trip to the South Pacific with UACCM

If you have ever wanted to visit lands with rich histories of Aboriginal culture, unique plants and animals, a diverse geographic landscape, and hospitable natives with great love and respect for the outdoors, join the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton (UACCM) Alumni and Friends Travel Program to explore all Australia and New Zealand have to offer. The “South Pacific Wonders” guided tour is a once in a lifetime vacation opportunity scheduled for October 4 through 18, 2010 with an optional four-day post-tour excursion to Fiji from October 18 through 21. The tour is open to a limited number of participants from the community of all ages. The 15 and 19-day tours will be led by a professional tour guide provided by Collette Vacations. The Australia and New Zealand portions will include 20 meals, hotel transfers, round trip airfare from Little Rock Regional Airport, air taxes, fees, and surcharges. The Fiji extension will include four additional meals.

The tour will begin with a stop in Cairns, Australia, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, followed by a high-speed catamaran ride to explore the reef via a glass bottom boat, beach watching, scuba diving, or snorkeling. Next, the tour will stop at the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Center to experience traditional dances and instruments, browse the renowned art gallery, tour a crocodile farm, and meet several koala bears. The tour will then head to Sydney to tour the city, take part in a dinner cruise, and tour the world-famous Sydney Opera House. After departing Australia, guests will descend upon the historic city of Christchurch, New Zealand to tour the Neo-Gothic Cathedral, visit a Canterbury farmyard, and enjoy a private dinner in the restored Victorian Riccarton House mansion. Other stops in New Zealand include Mt. Cook National Park, Hollyford Valley, Milford Sound, Queenstown, and others. Participants will even enjoy dinner one evening in the home of an actual New Zealand family. Travelers can choose to extend this amazing vacation an additional four days through a post-tour excursion to Fiji, where one can relax on the expansive beaches or in the crystal clear waters. The excursion is filled with many optional activities, so travelers can participate in whatever they prefer.

A free, no obligation multimedia presentation detailing “South Pacific Wonders” for any interested individuals will be held on Monday, February 15 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 102 in the UACCM Business Technology Center. The session will include a deeper explanation of what to expect on the tour and will also explain prices and payment options available. Renowned "Shades of Blue" Concert: Get Your Tickets Today!

Attention jazz lovers! UACCM is sponsoring the renowned “Shades of Blue” Jazz Ensemble in a special free community concert on Wednesday, February 17 at 6:30 p.m. in H.B. White Auditorium at Morrilton High School. “Shades of Blue” is a group of 18 professional musicians enlisted in the United States Air Force whose repertoire ranges from traditional big band jazz to bebop and swing to modern jazz. The group is based in St. Louis, Mo.

Concerts include contemporary jazz works as well as the classic sounds of artists such as Count Basie and Glenn Miller, and several of the band’s members are also gifted writers and arrangers—their compositions often featured during concerts. “Shades of Blue” has backed many jazz greats including Sammy Nestico, Bobby Shew, Toni Tennille, Tex Benecke, Shelley Berg, Carmen Bradford, and others. The band also regularly performs and teaches master classes at high school and collegiate jazz clinics and festivals throughout the Midwest.

Occasionally, the ensemble marches onto home plate or center court to play the national anthem for professional sports teams like the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls, and Milwaukee Bucks, and has performed before many sold-out crowds throughout Mid-America. Whether performing for a head of state, before a capacity crowd in northern Wisconsin, or for troops at home and abroad, “Shades of Blue” reflects the heritage and pride of this nation.

The concert is being offered free, but tickets are required for entrance.
Advance tickets can be reserved by contacting Jacob Ward at ward@uaccm.edu or at (501) 977-2142. Tickets are also available at the Information Desk in the University Center. A limited number of tickets will be offered at the door prior to the event, and seating for the concert will be held on a first-come, first-served basis.
