"Songs of the Americas" Sunday

It's Friday! It's almost finals time, so if you're looking for something to do while you take a break from studying this weekend, read on to find out about a UACCM choir concert...

Members of the UACCM Department of Music invite UACCM students, faculty, staff and the community to attend their final spring concert this Sunday, May 2 at 2:30 p.m. The concert is being offered free of charge and will be held in the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium. The theme of the performance is “Songs of the Americas” and will feature musical selections reaching from Newfoundland to New York to the Amazon rainforest arranged in a family-friendly concert.

The concert will feature the UACCM College Choir, Soundscape and vocal students. Concessions will be available for purchase during the event with proceeds benefitting the UACCM Music Society. The UACCM choir is composed of students of the college and is under the direction of Shannah Cummings. The Arkansas Association for Developmental Education (ArkADE) is offering a one-time $500 scholarship for the fall 2010 semester. The qualifications are below:

• Student must have completed 12 semester credit hours of college work with at least 3 credit hours of developmental education coursework
• Student must have attained a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on all coursework completed
• Student must be enrolled in an Arkansas college or university – cannot have a college degree
• Personal Essay
• Recommendation letter from faculty member

The deadline is June 15, 2010.

Students applying for the Arkansas Challenge/Lottery Scholarship, please remember the following:

1. You must complete the Youniversal Application by June 1st. You can complete this application by going to www.adhe.edu and selecting "Youniversal Application" on the left hand side of the page. You will then be asked a series of questions to determine which state programs you qualify for. The required User ID will be your e-mail address (don't use your UACCM e-mail since it will be disabled for the summer). If you have already set a User ID as your UACCM email address, you may change this by going to the Youniversal application, signing in as a return user and selecting "edit profile."
2. You must complete your FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov. 
3. If you have completed at least 12 credit hours by the end of the spring 2010 semester, you must request your transcript be sent to the Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE). This may be requested from the UACCM Registrar’s Office, in Room 215 of the University Center. Please indicate that you want your transcript to be processed at the end of the Spring 2010 term. If you have not completed at least 12 hours at the end of the spring 2010 semester, you must submit your high school transcript and a copy of your entrance score report (ACT or Compass scores) to:

UACCM Library: "Calling All Books!"

Good afternoon, UACCM. Now that we're all Spring Flinged (or is it Spring Flung?) out and are resting peacefully with tummies filled with hot dogs, chips and cookies, here's a note from the E. Allen Gordon Library:

All library materials checked out are due back on May 4. Any student who needs to keep materials past this date should contact the library staff at 977-2033. Any books not returned by this day will be considered overdue, and a hold will be placed on student records until the materials are returned. This hold will prevent a student from receiving transcripts, financial aid, or to register for summer or fall semesters.

Faculty who have materials checked out should return them before leaving for the summer. The library staff must do a complete inventory during the month of May. Due to a hard drive crash, we must do this inventory to restore the credibility of our data.  Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Spring Fling, New SGA Officers and More

Good afternoon, UACCM! Stop by the Fine Arts Auditorium this evening at 6:30 pm and help recognize approximately 60 UACCM students in the annual Student Recognition Ceremony. Honored students were nominated by faculty members for their outstanding academic achievement. Snacks will follow the ceremony in The Plaza.

It's almost Spring Fling time! SGA's Spring Fling will be held tomorrow fom 10:00 am - 2:00 pm in the parking lot outside Union Station. Students and faculty/staff should all stop by for free food, games and giveaways. 2004 American Idol finalist Matt Kester will also be performing live at approximately 11:30, so stop by and check it out!

Spring Fling, Back-to-School Bash, and many other student events held throughout the year on campus are sponsored and organized by the UACCM Student Government Association, and your 2010-2011 officers have officially been inducted! AR Symphony Orchestra for FREE & Student Recognition Ceremony This Week

The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra (ASO) Brass Quintet, Sturgis and Rockefeller Quartets and guests are scheduled to present “Brilliant Brass, Stirring Strings,” this Thursday April 29. The event will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium. It is being sponsored by the college and is offered to the public free of charge.

Members of the quartets are part of the larger Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and will perform a dynamic and energizing program at UACCM. The performance is part of the ASO’s “River Rhapsodies” series, which has been the must-have ticket in Little Rock for the past three seasons. Guests will enjoy the dazzle of the performers in a work by an illustrious Tchaikovsky contemporary and pioneer of the genre. Selections will step back two centuries for Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, in which the two soloists weave an intricate tapestry of sound. Schoenberg’s dramatic musical canvas is unique in conception and exciting to hear.

Seating for the event will be limited and will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis, so guests are advised to arrive early. Tickets are not required for entrance. For more information, contact Jacob Ward at (501) 977-2142 or at ward@uaccm.edu.

The annual UACCM Student Recognition Ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow evening, April 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium. During the ceremony, students will be recognized for outstanding academic achievement as nominated by their instructors. Everyone is invited to come out and support and congratulate all recipients.

Spring: The Perfect Time for a Fling

It's "All in the Timing" & New PTK Officers Announced

Tomorrow evening marks the first performance of the UACCM Theatre Department's All in the Timing spring production. The performances this Thursday through Saturday evenings will begin at 7:30 p.m., and the matinee performance on Sunday will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium.

According to UACCM Theatre Instructor Jim Harris, “The show combines wit, intellect, satire and just plain fun. It is an enjoyable performance for audiences of all ages.” UACCM students and community members make up the cast, which includes several local residents. Tickets to the performances are $8.00 for adults and are free to UACCM students with a valid student ID. The show is not recommended for children under 14 years of age as it contains some adult language. Tickets will be available at the door only and the house will open thirty minutes before curtain.

The UACCM chapter of Phi Theta Kappa recently elected new officers for the 2010-2011 academic year. Here they are:

UACCM Theatre Department Presents "All in the Timing"

The UACCM Theatre Department will present its annual spring theatre production this Thursday April 22 through Sunday, April 25, 2010. The feature this year is “All in the Timing,” by David Ives. The evening performances on April 22, 23, and 24 will begin at 7:30 p.m., and the matinee performance on April 25 will begin at 2:30 p.m. All performances will be held in the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium.

One of Ives' most popular books of plays, “All in the Timing” originated as an evening of six one-act comedies in 1993, and won him the Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award for Playwriting. The most well known play from “All in the Timing” is “The Philadelphia,” which follows a man who thinks he is just having a bad day, only to be informed by his friend that he has actually fallen into a metaphysical hole called a Philadelphia where literally everything goes wrong. The taxis don't take you where you want to go, the newsstands don't sell your newspaper and no matter what you order at a restaurant, you end up with a cheese steak.

Don't forget about the FREE Alaska Photography Slideshow Presentation featuring Terry Boyd this evening. Read on for more...Photographer Terry Boyd will present “Visions from Alaska,” an interactive 35mm slide photography presentation tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium. Sponsored by the college, this exhibit is offered free and is open to members of the public of all ages.

Boyd, a self-taught photographer originally from Russellville, travels and photographs the United States with emphasis on Alaska. He spends several months each summer in Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska and will be making an interactive visual presentation of images from his most recent trip. Locations featured in the presentation will include the Yukon, British Columbia, Badlands National Park and Arkansas in addition to Alaska. Boyd will donate several pieces of art to be given away in a drawing and will also have a selection of matted 5X7 and 6X9 prints available for purchase at the event. Since UACCM has been so supportive of Relay for Life so far, we thought we'dlet you know where we stand! To date, we have collected nearly $2,200, 0r 44%, of our goal of $5000! Of the current total, $352 came from our recent bake sale, $700 came from jeans days, and nearly $375 came from the UACCM Speech Department! Speech Instructor Pat Bailey incorporated the fundraiser into her lesson concerning persuasive speaking (and no, she didn’t bribe students with extra credit!) She then very generously matched the $186.12 donated by her students. Thank you so much Ms. Bailey and speech students for your donations! The remainder of funds collected has been donated by many other other departments on campus.

If you'd like to make a donationg, luminaries are available for purchase to honor those who are battling, have won, and have lost the fight against cancer. Forms are available outside the Institutional Advancement Office for anyone interested. There are also several coin cans spread throughout campus. Your loose change can go a long way! The Sky is Falling! No, Wait. Those are Golf Balls!

Attention all fans of golf and MONEY! The fifth annual Links for Learning Golf Tournament fundraiser for the UACCM Foundation is coming up on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the Morrilton Country Club (MCC). Even if you are unable to attend the tournament this year, you will still be able to get in on the action and win up to $1000 in the Links for Learning Golf Ball Drop! Read on to find out more...

During the golf ball drop, hundreds (hopefully) of golf balls will be hoisted in the air via helicopter or crane and will be dropped above the green on hole #18 at MCC. Each numbered golf ball will coincide with YOUR ticket, and the ball that lands in the hole or closest to the pin will win half of the fundraiser proceeds, up to $1000!

For only a $10 donation to the Foundation, you will have the opportunity to participate and make some big money. Tickets are available now in the UACCM Institutional Advancement Office. Tomorrow marks the UACCM Otaku Club's Guitar Hero World Tour Tournament! The event will be held in Union Station from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Participants will compete head-to-head, and the winner (two of three) advances to the next round. The top three winners will compete for the win and will each receive prizes. FREE Tickets to See The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra!

The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will present a special concert in Russellville at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, April 17, at Witherspoon Auditorium on the campus of Arkansas Tech University. The concert, sponsored by the Russellville Symphony Guild, will feature the entire Symphony membership and will include both classical and pops selections. Tickets are $10 for the performance, but UACCM students will be admitted free to the concert with a valid student ID! From Facebook to Photos: Community Ed. Classes Have it All

Good afternoon, UACCM! Interested in taking a class just for fun or to learn a new skill or brush up on something you already know a little about? If so, take a look at all of the community education classes coming up the remainder of the semester. Classes are open to students of all ages and feature NO EXAMS! • If you’ve mastered the recipe to that classic cake but need some help making it look as good as it tastes, the UACCM Community Education Program is offering a class that’s designed just for you. Advanced Cake Decorating will be held each Thursday from April 15 through May 20, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The course is open to members of the community of all ages. According to class instructor Diann Stanek, “This course is designed to give anyone interested in learning more about creating professional looking cakes the knowledge to do so.” Topics covered during the class will include working with fondant icing and learning the decorating techniques of professionals. The registration fee for Advanced Cake Decorating is $40 per person, with persons over the age of 60 receiving a $5 discount. Participants will be responsible for furnishing their own supplies, and a supply list will be provided when registering for the class. The deadline to register is Tuesday, April 13, 2010.
• A Microsoft Access 2007 class is scheduled for Monday, April 19 and Monday, April 26, 2010. The class is scheduled to be held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. each evening at the new UACCM Leadership Development Institute in downtown Morrilton. Microsoft Access functions is a relational database management system which uses a computer to store a collection as data organized in a manner that allows easy access, retrieval and use of that data. According to course instructor Kelly Dow, “In simple terms, Microsoft Access functions as an electronic filing cabinet. It’s an ideal program for anyone wanting to learn how to store, update, and retrieve data for items such as inventory, personnel, sales, collectibles and creating mail merge letters with address labels.” The registration fee for Microsoft Access 2007 is $40 per person, with persons over the age of 60 receiving a $5 discount. The deadline to register is Friday, April 16.
• If you haven’t had the courage to try out the popular social networking site Facebook or if you are new to the site and want to learn more about it, the UACCM Community Education Department is offering a class—Introduction to Facebook, that is designed just for you. The class will meet from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20 and Tuesday, April 27 at the new UACCM Leadership Development Institute in downtown Morrilton. The course is open to members of the community of all ages. The class will serve as a basic introduction to Facebook, and participants will learn the “philosophy” of Facebook as well as how to create a Facebook account and profile, post status updates, search friends, friend someone, join a group, become a fan of a business or organization page, and more. An existing e-mail account and basic computer skills are required. According to class instructor Jacob Ward, “Facebook use among people of all ages is continually on the rise. Learning how to use Facebook effectively can help anyone make business connections, find old friends or classmates, keep up with family members across the world, and so much more.” The registration fee for Introduction to Facebook is $40 per person, with persons over the age of 60 receiving a $5 discount. The deadline to register is Thursday, April 15, 2010.

Thursday: Relay for Life Bake Sale Fundraiser

UACCM will hold a bake sale fundraiser benefitting the Conway/Perry Counties' Relay for Life on Thursday, April 8 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm in the University Center Lobby. Items will be sold in individual packages for $1 each, so make sure and bring some $$$! Thank you for supporting Relay for Life! UACCM Phi Beta Lambda members would like to thank everyone who donated to the March of Dimes during the PBL fundraiser Monday. All proceeds will be donated to the March of Dimes Walk of Wonder this Saturday at the PBL state leadership conference in LIttle Rock. Seven of UACCM's PBL members will be attending the events and presenting the donations. Thanks so much for the support!

Advising/Pre-Registration is Here, Disc Golf next week!

Good afternoon, UACCM! Hope you all had a great Easter.

• Advising and pre-registration is here! Stop by your advisor's office ASAP if you haven't signed up for an advising appointment. Day classes are canceled tomorrow, April 6 and Wednesday, April 7 for advising (evening classes beginning at or after 4:30 pm will meet), and pre-registration is being held all week. The earlier you register, the more likely you are to get the classes and schedule you want, so see your advisor soon and make it happen! 
• The next Intramural Sports event is disc golf! Play will begin nest Monday, April 12 and continue through Wednesday, April 28 on the new Timberwolf Disc Golf Course. Participants will be permitted to play three rounds (nine holes each), with your total score being the sum of the three games. Score cards and discs are available in Union Station. Drop by Union Station with any questions.
• New SGA Officer candidates have been announced! The following candidates have filed for officer positions in the UACCM SGA: President-Doug Welter, Vice president-Dustin Taylor, Secretary/Treasurer-Tonie Lott, Parliamentarian/Historian-Clayton Crotts. An election will be held on Thursday, April 15. Students: check your UACCM e-mail for a chance to vote.
• There's a Spanish proverb that goes as such: “One who knows two languages is worth two.” UACCM now offers Spanish courses! Talk to your advisor NOW to find out more on how you can expand your knowledge by learning an uber-important second language!

• Phi Beta Lambda members will be collecting money for the March of Dimes next Monday, April 5 throughout the day. PBL members will be standing at the entrances to most campus buildings collecting donations, so be sure to bring your spare change! 
• Pre-registration for May intersession, summer, and fall 2010 classes is coming your way April 5-16. Next week, current and returning students can register by signing up for an appointment on your advisor's office door. (If you don't know who your advisor is, log on to Campus Connect). New and current students can pre-register April 12-16 by making an appointment with Jan Magie (501-977-2165). Sign up for an appointment ASAP...they're filling up fast!
• Day classes are canceled next Tuesday, April 6 and Wednesday, April 7 for advising appointments. All classes meeting at or after 4:30 p.m. will still meet these days. 

• Satisfy your sweet tooth next Thursday, April 8 at the Relay for Life Bake Sale fundraiser. Scheduled for 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, the bake sale will feature delicious cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and more sold individually in the University Center Lobby and in Union Station. All proceeds benefit Conway/Perry counties Relay for Life.

The majestic views of Alaska are widely known as some of the most breathtaking sights in the world. Unfortunately, many people never get the chance to experience them firsthand. Photographer Terry Boyd will present “Visions from Alaska,” an interactive 35mm slide photography presentation, on Thursday, April 15, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. in the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium. Sponsored by the college, this exhibit is offered free and is open to members of the public of all ages.
