Students/Faculty Explore London & Japan - More to Come!

Four UACCM Instructors recently led groups of students and community members to explore London and Japan on two EF Educational Tours. Instructors Gretchen Schol and Tina Lake led the group to London during spring break 2010, where travelers experienced Windsor Castle, Big Ben, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and the British Museum with stops at the ancient site of Stonehenge, the Roman ruins at Bath, the famed Canterbury Cathedral and much more.

A group of students, faculty members, alumni and community members also discovered the mystery of Japan on an EF Educational Tour during the May 2010 intersession. Lyndsey Daniel and Karen Caig joined travelers during two sightseeing tours in Tokyo and Kyoto, visits to the Meiji Shinto Shrine, Asakusa Kannon Temple, Nijo Castle, Heian Shrine and Garden, Gold Pavilion, Osaka Castle, a Sumida River cruise and more. Students were also able to take a three credit-hour humanities course on Japan in addition to the trip. With UACCM’s new Global Studies course, more students will be eligible to explore foreign countries for college credit. According to Daniel, “Knowledge of the Japanese culture is becoming increasingly important in global business.” UACCM recently created a Japanese Club (Otaku Club) to accommodate the growing interest in Japan. For a few photos from the trip, click here.

The London and Japan trips were the most recent in a line of educational tours sponsored by UACCM instructors. Upcoming tours include locations in Peru and Italy. For more information on the Peru trip, e-mail daniel@uaccm.edu and for information on the Italy trip, e-mail lake@uaccm.edu.

Hundreds Attend Retirement Reception/Grand Opening

UACCM recently held a retirement reception for Chancellor Nathan Crook at the Leadership Development Institute (LDI) in downtown Morrilton. The event also served as the facility’s official grand opening, with an estimated 300 guests dropping in to wish Chancellor Crook farewell and to tour the renovated building.

Chancellor Crook will step down on June 30, 2010, ending a 25-year stretch of leadership at the college. During the retirement reception, Conway County Judge Jimmy Hart and Morrilton Mayor Bobby Kirby presented Crook with a plaque proclaiming June 3 Nathan Crook Day in Morrilton. University of Arkansas System President Dr. B. Alan Sugg also presented Crook with a plaque naming him UACCM Chancellor Emeritus upon his retirement, and the UACCM Board of Visitors announced the re-naming of the University Center on campus to the C. Nathan Crook University Center. UACCM faculty and staff members offered two framed aerial photos—one depicting the campus of Petit Jean Vocational Technical School when Crook began his career in 1985 and the other depicting the UACCM campus in 2010. Since 1985, Crook has overseen an incredible physical growth of the campus with the construction of several major academic and student support buildings including the UACCM Technology II Building, Earle Love Child Study Center, Science Building, Plaza, Fine Arts Building, Fine Arts Auditorium, Business Technology Center, University Center and Library Complex. Student enrollment has also seen a near 700 percent increase during his tenure.

The new LDI in downtown Morrilton is one of Crook’s most recent accomplishments, and guests attending the retirement reception also got a firsthand look at the new facility. Located in the former Greer’s Department Store in Morrilton, the completely renovated facility is home to the UACCM Community Outreach Department and features a gallery and reception area, a classroom, computer lab, community room, two conference rooms and several offices. The building serves the Community Outreach Department by serving as a venue for community education classes and workforce training initiatives.

For a full list of Chancellor Crook’s accomplishments as well as information on the search for UACCM’s next chancellor, visit http://www.uaccm.edu/. For more information on courses and services offered at the LDI, visit http://www.uaccm.edu/ and click on “Community.”

Great Arkansas Pig Out to Benefit School Counts!

The Great Arkansas Pig Out (GAPO) Festival Board and the Morrilton Area Chamber of Commerce have supported a successful community and regional festival for 20 years. To celebrate the continuing success of the festival, the GAPO Board recently announced their ongoing commitment to the Conway County School Counts! initiative by naming the initiative as beneficiary of their endeavors with the festival for the second consecutive year.

According to GAPO 2010 Chairperson Kristi Strain, “We continue to support the promotion of higher education to students in Conway County. By partnering with School Counts! again this year, we hope to further emphasize the value of education and a highly qualified workforce to area parents, students, residents, and businesses.”

The Initiative was begun in 2006 to enhance Conway County’s economic development activities by promoting continued education and training for the graduates of the public and private high schools in Conway County. The initiative has developed a formal partnership between the K-12 schools in Conway County, UACCM and area businesses and industries. This partnership emphasizes the importance of education in the development of a better skilled workforce to attract and retain businesses and industries in the county.

The annual GAPO Festival will be held June 25 and 26, 2010 at the Morrilton City Park and will feature food, activities and live entertainment by Wade Bowen, Chuck Allen Floyd, the Randy Rogers Band, Matt Stell and The Crashers and the Culpepper Mountain Band.
