Governor Beebe in Morrilton Aug. 30

UACCM students and employees have been extended an invitation to greet Governor Mike Beebe when he visits Morrilton on Monday, August 30. Governor Beebe will be the special guest at the grand opening of the Conway County Democratic Headquarters located at 1401 East Broadway (Hwy 64).

The event will begin at 5 pm., and refreshments will be served. Also honored at the opening will be Johnny Hoyt, candidate for state senate, and Tommy Thompson, candidate for state representative.

Go to School in the 501? New Scholarship Available

The Conway Business and Professional Women (CBPW) organization is taking applications for the new 501 LIFE Scholarship. The scholarship will be for $501 and can be used for books, tuition, etc. Preference will be given to non-traditional, female students, 25 years or older, attending a college in the 501 area code.

Deadline: September 15, 2010
Requirements include: Completed application, three recommendations, and a 2.5 GPA, plus a typed essay outlining your educational/professional goals and community service activities.
Recipient must read their essay at the Conway BPW meeting in September.

“AIMING FOR EDUCATION” Skeet Shoot Fundraiser Sept. 12

The third annual “Aiming for Education” Skeet Shoot fundraiser for the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton Foundation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at Point Remove Lodge in Hattieville.

“Aiming for Education” will consist of 15 three-person skeet shooting teams, and will also feature a youth clay shoot contest open to 40 youth participants. The cost of entry for the adult skeet shoot is $50 per player or $150 for each three-person team, and 10, 12, and 20-gauge ammunition will be provided. Mixed teams of men and women are welcome. The cost of entry for the youth trap shoot is $20 for each participant, which includes a Ducks Unlimited Greenwing membership. A casual dinner will be served at the close of the event. All registered players will receive a gift bag, and door prizes will be awarded throughout the day.

Forms should be returned by Wednesday, September 8 to UACCM Foundation, Attn: Mary Clark, 1537 University Blvd., Morrilton, AR 72110. Need Access to a Computer on Campus?

UACCM students who need to get online have access to several places on campus where computers are available for student use.
• Kirk Building Room 114—Open from 7:30 am -4:30 pm Monday through Friday
• Kirk Building Room 139 (Career Pathways Lab)—Open 8:00 am- 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. While you don’t have to be a Career Pathways’ student to use the lab, those students do get priority for computer usage.
• Business Technology Center Room 209—Open from 7:30 am -6:00 pm Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday; 7:30 am -4:30 pm Thursday and Friday
• E. Allen Gordon Library—Open 7:30 am- 6:30 pm Monday through Thursday; 7:30 am-4:30 pm on Friday
• Library Complex Room 105—Open 7:30 am-4:30 pm— Note: you must work around classes that use the
lab. If the class has started and there are empty seats, you may quietly use the open computers.
There are also several buildings on campus that have Wi-Fi.

Important Drop Deadlines

Attention Students:
We certainly don't want to lose you, but if circumstances require that you need to drop a course or courses, please refer to the following deadlines:

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 is the last day to drop “full-semester courses” with a 50% refund.
Thursday, August 26, 2010 is the last day to drop fall 2010 courses without a “W” appearing on your transcript.
The following is a link to the Registrar’s website where you may find a “Course Withdrawal Form.”  http://www.uaccm.edu/Current_Student/Registrar/course_withdrawal_form.pdf

You may also pick up the form in the Registrar’s Office located on the 2nd floor of the University Center, Room 215. Students who need to drop a course(s) must fill in the student portion of the Course Withdraw Form (including the course(s) you wish to drop), then follow the steps below to complete the process:
Step 1 – Meet with your Advisor or Division Chair for signature.(The name of your advisor and course information can be found on your Campus Connect.)
Step 2 – If it is a complete withdrawal – you must go to the Library for signature.
If not a complete withdrawal – skip this signature and proceed to step 3.
Step 3 – Answer if you received any type of financial aid this semester.
If yes, then you must go to the Financial Aid Office for signature.
If no, then skip this signature and proceed to step 4.
Step 4 – Stop by the Student Accounts Window for signature
Step 5 – Return the completed form to the Registrar’s Office for processing by 4:30 p.m. on the day you wish to drop.

Interested in joining a Spanish Club at UACCM?

UACCM is gauging interest of possibly starting a SPANISH CLUB!! The UACCM Theatre Department announces auditions for UACCM Theatre’s first children’s theatre production! "The Mirrorman" is a highly interactive play for children, grades 1-4. The Department needs two men and two women to fill the roles. No experience is necessary, anyone aged 16 or older may try out, and nothing needs be prepared for the audition. Here’s the info:

Sew What?

The UACCM Music Department is in need of some skilled seamstresses to help sew costumes for our students and faculty members that will be involved in its upcoming Madrigal Feast.The fabric will be provided and seamstresses will be compensated for their time through complimentary tickets to the feast.

Anyone who is interested in sewing a costume or two should contact Music Instructor Shannah Cummings at (501) 977-2198 or cummings@uaccm.edu. Ms. Cummings will assign seamstresses to a student or cast member in need. (Please note that these costumes are Renaissance gowns and outfits and will be very intricate and detailed.) The Madrigal Feast is scheduled for December 4, 10, and 11 at the Leadership Development Institute in downtown Morrilton.

Join the Student Government Association - First Meeting August 19

The Student Government Association (SGA) will have its first meeting of the fall 2010 semester from 12:05 p.m. to 12:55 p.m. on Thursday, August 19 in Room 201 of the University Center. Free pizza and cokes will be available. Students are encouraged to stop by and find out more about opportunities to participate in SGA. This very important student organization plans events, activities, and serves as the official voice of the students at UACCM.

Welcome to the Decades Week

UACCM would like to welcome everyone back to campus for the start of the Fall 2010 semester! As we near the 50th anniversary of the college's founding, we want to pay tribute to each decade we have been in existence.The Student Government Association (SGA) has planned lots of activities this week, starting with 1960's day on Monday, August 16. Step back in time and celebrate the era of mini-skirts and tie-dyed shirts when Petit Jean Vo-Tech was established as the state's 2nd vocational technical school.
Among today's activities presented by SGA is TOTALLY TATTOOS. Come get a free air brush tattoo from 10 am to 4 pm at Union Station in the Kirk Building.

Also, stop by the “Question Tent” today – come meet your SGA president Doug Welter outside the Fine Arts Auditorium under the red tent.

Bust out the sequined vests and leisure suits and travel back to the 1970’s when our enrollment hit 500 students for the first time!
Tuesday Michael C. Anthony will perform live in the Fine Arts Auditorium beginning at 11:30 am – come see the show or be the show! There will be 30 students on stage (1st ones to reach the stage once he has asked for volunteers).

Drag out your neon leg warmers and Members Only jackets and represent this era of the big hair and bigger shoulder pads!
Ice cream social from 12:05 pm to 12:55 pm in Union Square, plus the Student Involvement Fair (same time, same place) where you can come meet student organizations and see how you can get involved!

1990’s Day
The 90’s marked lots of transformations for the college, with name changes in 1991 (Petit Jean Technical College) and 1997 (Petit Jean College). Get out the washed out denim and wind suits and come watch “Iron Man 2,” today’s FREE movie from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in Union Station.

The first decade of the new millennium saw our merger with the University of Arkansas System and another name change to the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton. Help us celebrate an almost 700 percent increase in enrollment since 2000 by wearing your favorite things from the past 10 years.

One Book, One Community program starts Sept. 21

 A recent blog story regarding the development of an all campus, all-community book discussion program co-sponsored by UACCM and the Conway County Library reported an incorrect starting date for the program. The first meeting by the book discussion groups formed will be September 21 at 7:00 pm on the UACCM campus. 
As part of the “One book, One Community,” book program, students, faculty, and staff at UACCM, Conway County Library patrons and book lovers throughout the area will be encouraged to read Belle in the Slouch Hat, by Mimi Mathis and engage in thoughtful, productive discussions about the issues raised in the book. On November 16, all participants and anyone interested will have a chance to meet the author and hear her experiences as she wrote the book. Register and pick up a free copy of the book at at the E. Fall Registration August 4 and 5

Regular registration for the fall 2010 semester will begin on Wednesday, August 4, 2010. All new and returning students who did not pre-register should plan to register according to the alphabetical schedule below:

Students whose last names begin with the letters S through Z may register from 8:00 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, August 4. The alphabetical schedule continues throughout the day with students whose last names begin with the letters A through I registering from noon to 4:00 p.m. and students whose last names begin with the letters S through Z and A through I registering from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Registration will continue on Thursday, August 5 with students whose last names begin with the letters J through R registering from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Open registration will be held from noon to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 5. Students are encouraged to register as early as possible due to the extremely limited class spaces available. New UACCM students will be required to attend new student orientation on either Monday, August 9 or Tuesday, August 10, and all classes for both new and returning students will begin on Thursday, August 12.
UACCM will offer condensed-term classes which will begin later in the semester. For more information on registration for condensed-term classes, contact the UACCM Admissions Office at (501) 977-2053.
