New Workforce, Community Education Courses Announced

The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton will offer several non-credit courses over the next few weeks — including Employment 101, Medical Terminology, and Child Care Orientation Training — beginning with an eight-week Introduction to Welding Basics course starting Jan. 23. All courses are sponsored by the Office of Workforce and Community Education.

Note: These courses follow the UACCM Community Education Day on Jan. 21. Four courses will be offered to the public during this event, which you can read about here.

• Jan. 23 – March 17: The Introduction to Welding Basics course, which meets Monday through Friday from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., comprises over 135 hours of hands-on classroom instruction in welding, craft skills, OSHA safety certification, soft skills, and resume writing, along with the possibility of up to six hours of prior learning credit. Registration for the course is $450, though some participants may qualify for grant funding.

• Jan. 23 – Feb. 20: Take the Medical Terminology course to get a jump-start on commonly used medical terms. Designed to complement any medical-related field, Medical Terminology is especially beneficial to nurses, nursing assistants and emergency medical technicians. Registration is $100 for the course, which meets every Monday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

• Jan. 23 – Feb. 27: Creative Activities for Early Childhood is a free, 15-hour training course for educators by the Early Childhood Education Project. The course helps to improve quality of care by training teachers in planning and developing creative activities that are designed to aid children as they grow cognitively, socially, physically, and emotionally. Class meets each Monday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

• Jan. 24 – Jan. 31: Child Care Orientation Training is a free, 10-hour training course for child care workers presented by the University of Arkansas in collaboration with secondary vocational centers, postsecondary vocational technical schools, technical institutes, technical colleges, and community colleges. Class meets each Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

• Jan. 28 – Feb. 4: Preventing Child Abuse & Neglect (PCAN) is a free training course for educators by the Early Childhood Education Project. PCAN is based on the philosophy of helping child care providers promote positive parenting and healthy social-emotional development in children. Class meets for two Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

• Feb. 4 – March 18: Multi-Craft Training for Industrial Mechanics comprises 56 hours of training in basic hydraulics/pneumatics, electricity, and motor controls to prepare you for an entry-level job in industrial maintenance. Participants will earn multi-meter 504 and 575 certification, as well as a certificate of completion. Registration for the course is $450, though some participants may qualify for grant funding. Class meets each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

• Feb. 5: If you already have a current Healthcare Provider CPR card, you may register for Advanced Cardiac Life Support. This upper-level course, which runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., highlights the importance of high-performance team dynamics and communication, systems of care, recognition and intervention of cardiopulmonary arrest, immediate post-cardiac arrest, acute dysrhythmia, stroke and acute coronary syndromes. Registration for the one-day course is $225.

• Feb. 6 – Feb. 22: The Microsoft Word Basics course will be offered from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday. Participants will learn and practice basic Microsoft Word skills such as format and align text, adjust margins, change line spacing, insert special characters and pictures, and more. Registration for the course is $100.

Participants who plan to attend Introduction to Welding Basics or Multi-Craft Training for Industrial Mechanics are required to attend an Employment 101 course prior to the beginning of class. The two-hour course, which normally has a registration fee of $10, will be free to participants who are required to take it. There are Employment 101 courses scheduled for Jan. 23, Feb. 20 and Feb. 21.
