The event co-sponsored by Petit Jean State Bank and is free and open to the public.

UACCM encourages area schools to bring students to this dynamic presentation as anticipation builds for the April 8 total eclipse. Dr. Straughn is a native of Bee Branch, AR, is a graduate of South Side Bee Branch High School, and credits growing up under the dark skies of rural Arkansas to her early interest in astronomy.

Straughn is an astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD, where she serves as the Associate Director of the Astrophysics Science Division and serves as the Deputy Project Scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope Science Communications. She earned her B.S. in Physics from the University of Arkansas in 2002 and went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Physics at Arizona State University in 2008.

The James Webb Space Telescope is the largest, most complex off-Earth observatory in the world. It lifted off on Christmas Day of 2021 and is now 1 million miles away from Earth where it is capturing and sending back incredible images of the universe.

Staughn is an accomplished public speaker and has appeared on CBS 60 Minutes, PBS NOVA, The Discovery Channel, The Science Channel, NatGeo, and in a segment on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. She was recently profiled in AY magazine. When she isn't thinking about space, Amber enjoys hiking, yoga, live music, flying her Cessna Skylane with her husband Matt, and playing with her two Great Danes.

School officials who wish to bring groups of students should contact UACCM director of marketing and public relations Mary Clark at (501) 977-2011 or clark@uaccm.edu. UACCM will accommodate groups by developing a seating chart for the individuals from specific schools to sit together.

More information on this program and other UACCM eclipse-related activities is available at www.uaccm.edu/eclipse.
UACCMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14205946931660428905noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7737399058439437174.post-89225325981442845922024-03-13T11:13:00.006-05:002024-03-13T11:20:21.686-05:00Important Financial Aid Information for Summer '24

If you are planning to attend summer 2024 classes at UACCM, you should be aware of a few things concerning financial aid you could receive in the summer.

If you are eligible for Pell and have received Pell full-time in the fall 2023 and spring 2024 semesters, you will need to take at least 6 hours during the summer to receive additional Pell funds. (UACCM) has a reported 1,963 students enrolled for spring 2024. That is a 16
percent increase over spring 2023, which saw an enrollment of 1,665. The
increase in spring enrollment is the second straight spring of increased
enrollment for UACCM.

Also seeing an increase are the student semester credit
hours (SSCH), which grew for the second consecutive spring. In 2022, SSCH was
at 16,638; 2023 saw an SSCH of 16,992; and this spring saw SSCH at 19,492.

“The increase in
headcount for the Spring semester was largely due to the increase in the number
of concurrent students from high schools. It is very close to the fall increase
and consists primarily of Greenbrier students,” said UACCM Chancellor Lisa
Willenberg. “We are in conversations with multiple additional high schools in
our service area for similar arrangements where their high school students can
get a jump start on the college credits, both in general education core courses
as well as career and technical skills programs.”

UACCM has continued to see steady growth in high school
students since 2021. Each spring since has seen growth, the largest being this
spring, with 631 high school students enrolled for spring 2024, compared to the
317 high school students enrolled for spring 2023.

speaker series.

Eckford made history as a member of the Little Rock Nine, a
group of nine African American students who desegregated Little Rock Central
High School in 1957. The image of fifteen-year-old Eckford, walking through a
screaming mob in front of Central High School, propelled the crisis into the nation’s
living rooms and brought international attention to Little Rock.

In 1958, Eckford was awarded the Spingarn Medal by the
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), along with
the rest of the Little Rock Nine. In 1997, Eckford shared the Father Joseph
Blitz Award, presented by the National Conference for Community and Justice. In
1999, President Bill Clinton presented Eckford and the other members of the
Little Rock Nine with the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation’s highest
civilian award.

Joining Eckford will be Dr. Sybil Jordan Hampton, a lifelong
educator and self-proclaimed social justice foot soldier. Prior to retiring in
2006, Hampton served as President of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, and
as Contributions Manager, Education and Culture at the GTE Corporate
Foundation. Hampton also has 23 years of academic administrative experience

UACCM is one of 10 colleges nationwide to receive a grant in 2023 through Johnson Controls Community College Partnership Program.

As thousands of skilled technicians are projected to leave the workforce each year over the next decade due to heightened retirements or career changes, UACCM and Johnson Controls share a common goal of prioritizing investments in workforce training and recruitment to bridge the skilled trades gap. This grant will be essential in providing HVAC students with the best education, equipment, training, and mentoring that will lead graduates to successful careers.

“UACCM is thrilled with this exciting and important partnership. The leadership and vision of Johnson Controls is to be acknowledged and commended. This partnership opportunity made possible by Johnson Controls is a great example of an industry taking the initiative of responding to their workforce needs by growing their own skilled technicians,” said UACCM Chancellor Lisa Willenberg. “By partnering with UACCM’s workforce education and training tech hub through providing scholarships and equipment, Johnson Controls is removing barriers and paving the way for their future technicians by helping fund those trainees in a state-of-the-art training facility with quality instructors who have had successful careers in their field. Business and industry aligning with education benefits all parties involved.”

Johnson Controls employees in the surrounding area also will work with UACCM to mentor and encourage students to join the skilled trades workforce. UACCM welcomed Johnson Controls General Manager for West Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma markets Deepak Chandrasekaran, along with several Arkansas-based Johnson Control representatives to campus for an introductory meeting between the mentors and mentees. Through relationship building with industry professionals, students will be able to ask mentors questions and get a glimpse into the promising career trajectory following training completion.

UACCM Vice Chancellor for Academics Dr. Richard Counts noted that during the first year of the multi-year grant, the funds will be split with $50,000 directed toward the purchase of personal protective equipment and new trainers/equipment and $50,000 will be used for “last dollar” scholarships for HVAC students.

“Not only are we investing in the next generation of workforce leaders, but the mentoring associated with this initiative reminds our employees why we do what we do,” said Julie Brandt, president of Building Solutions North America at Johnson Controls. “We’re looking at our future, and through partnerships with these colleges, we’re all contributing to a better supported trades industry.”

To learn more about the Johnson Controls Community College Partnership Program, visit: https://www.johnsoncontrols.com/corporate-sustainability/community/philanthropy/community-college-partnership

UACCMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14205946931660428905noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7737399058439437174.post-67440694791347160262024-01-08T09:50:00.000-06:002024-01-08T09:50:59.781-06:00Davis Nursing Scholarship Established

The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton (UACCM) is honored to share that the Dr. Larry and Carlene Davis Nursing Scholarship has been established as a new endowment at the college.

The scholarship created by Dr. Larry and Carlene Davis is in honor of the couple’s daughter, Sara Woods, who is a practicing MSN degree nurse in Oklahoma. Davis said he and his wife Carlene are thrilled to support the students who will be attending classes in the college’s planned Nursing & Health Center set to open in late 2025 or early 2026.

The endowed scholarship will be awarded based on financial need for full-time students in the Practical Nursing (LPN) and Registered Nursing (RN) programs at UACCM. The recipients must be Arkansas residents. Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.50 or higher (first-time entering students will use high school GPA) and must submit an essay on the topic, “Why I Want to Be a Nurse”. Multiple scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $250 per semester.

UACCM director of marketing and public relations Mary Clark stated, “We are so grateful to Dr. Larry and Carlene Davis for their thoughtfulness and generosity. This will be a profound gift for the nursing program and will change many lives.

“Scholarships often make the difference in our students’ ability to attend college and obtain a degree. Many of our students are non-traditional and balancing school, work, and family life. With the shortage of nurses growing, this scholarship will provide much-needed healthcare providers in our region.”

The Davises presented a check in the amount of $25,099.97 to the UACCM Foundation, which included $13,099.97 from a retirement plan account Required Minimum Distribution (RMD).

The Required Minimum Distribution is the minimum amount retirees must withdraw from their traditional IRA and other retirement plan accounts each year once they reach age 73 according to U.S. tax laws. Davis noted that while the RMD tax plan requires individuals to take money from their annuity each year, those funds awarded to non-profit organizations are not taxed. He hopes his endowment gift will encourage and inspire others to consider making similar contributions to non-profit organizations.

The minimum amount needed to establish an endowment is $5,000 and the fund must reach $25,000 within five years to become fully endowed. These funds will be invested by the Foundation and awards made from the interest earned. The principal of the fund is held intact, with a small percentage of interest reinvested in growth to equal inflation, so that scholarships are awarded in perpetuity. Because an endowed scholarship is awarded now, and for the generations to come, donors can create a legacy for themselves or a loved one. Endowed scholarships are held by the UA Foundation for one year before the first interest proceeds are available for scholarships.

Dr. Larry Davis served as UACCM Chancellor from 2010 until his retirement in 2019. This summer, his legacy was cemented on the UACCM campus, as the Dr. Larry D. Davis Workforce Training Center was rededicated in his honor.
UACCMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14205946931660428905noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7737399058439437174.post-64756330561968611072024-01-05T13:01:00.000-06:002024-01-05T13:01:01.315-06:00UACCM Celebrates Nursing Graduates

In December, UACCM was proud to celebrate its graduates from the Practical Nursing and Registered Nursing programs.

A total of 50 students graduated from the programs with several having jobs with local medical facilities already lined up, or choosing to continue their education.

During the Practical Nursing Pinning Ceremony, <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Mia Chantha, from Conway, was awarded the

From being raised in a small community, UACCM felt like home. Everyone is so helpful and welcoming, it made choosing UACCM so easy.

What are your educational and career goals?

I am majoring in General Education. Once I finish with my associate degree here at UACCM, I plan to attend the University of Arkansas Medical School (UAMS) to further my education in Sonography. After completing UAMS’s program of Diagnostic Sonography, I will be an Ultrasound Technician.

Why an Ultrasound Technician?

I would like the power of making a difference. I will be able to help expecting parents get the first glimpse of their babies. Having the opportunity of capturing a special moment like that will be remarkable.

When you realized that you had won Miss UACCM, what did you think and feel?

All kinds of emotion went through me. I felt honored to have been chosen to represent the very school that has helped me pursue my dream. I had never thought that I would have won something so special and miraculous.

What does it mean to you to be Miss UACCM?

Being Miss UACCM means being honorable, confident, and being dedicated to your community. Miss UACCM is a representative for UACCM as a whole, so it is a big role to fill.

What do you wish people knew about you?

I wish people knew how family oriented I am. I love spending time with my loved ones and playing board games because of how competitive we all are! I also wish people knew how much I love the outdoors and how much peace it gives me.

What is your favorite part of UACCM?

My favorite part of UACCM is the cost to attend. I do not come from a very wealthy family, so having a low tuition rate has helped me pursue my dream of becoming a sonographer. Having this opportunity, and not having to go into debt, has made my dreams feel so much more achievable.
UACCMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14205946931660428905noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7737399058439437174.post-6254486267274115302023-11-08T08:33:00.004-06:002023-11-08T08:33:46.483-06:00WILLIAMS NAMED MISS UACCM 20223

Zaybrau Williams, 19, of Dardanelle was crowned Ms. UACCM 2023 after competing in the fifteenth annual UACCM Pageant on Saturday, November 4, at the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton’s Fine Arts Auditorium.

Williams is the daughter of Angela Thompson of Dardanelle. (UACCM) has reported a preliminary fall enrollment of 2,229 students,
Chancellor Lisa Willenberg announced today.

“It’s a great time to be a part of UACCM,” Willenberg said.
“I am so grateful to everyone for their parts in recruiting, enrolling, and
retaining students.”

The 2,229 students represent an 18% growth from last fall’s
1,888 students. The fall mark of 2,229 also serves as the highest reported fall
enrollment since 2012.

Willenberg noted that in addition to the 18% increase in
headcount, UACCM had a 12% increase in student semester credit hours (SSCH),
which is the number of credit hours in which students are enrolled. The total
number of credit hours students take is important because it drives the tuition
and fee revenue.

“One of the biggest factors in our current enrollment figures
are concurrent students,” Willenberg said. “These students desire more options
and flexibility in their education. Our partnerships with various high
schools and four-year universities in the area are making that a reality.”

In July, UACCM and Greenbrier High School launched the
Greenbrier High School-UACCM Core+ Impact Academy Partnership, which expanded
on the previous concurrent enrollment opportunities for Greenbrier.
UACCMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14205946931660428905noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7737399058439437174.post-4009503346932301782023-09-01T14:46:00.001-05:002023-09-01T14:46:45.521-05:00UACCM TO HOST 60-YEAR COMMUNITY FESTIVAL

To commemorate 60 years since its establishment, the
University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton (UACCM) will host a
community-wide festival on Thursday, September 21. The casual, festival-style event,
suitable for all ages, will begin at 4:30 p.m. and continue until 8:00 p.m. Activities will include
a car show, free food, live music, and games for the public to enjoy.

Additionally, there will be a display of UACCM memorabilia
from each decade since UACCM’s opening in 1963. The event will also feature
several children’s games, activities, and bounce house. There will also be a
special area for retirees to reminisce. There will be a brief ceremony at
approximately 6:00 p.m. that will include an official welcome and introduction
of several special guests including former college leaders and UACCM’s
outstanding alumni of the year Bill Zellner. Retirees and all alumni will also
be recognized as a group.

Homegrown musical duo Cliff and Susan will be performing
live music for the festival. Cliff and Susan have each been creating music for
decades before forming their duo in 2016 and getting married in 2017. Cliff and
Susan have over 2,000 songs in their arsenal and have captivated audiences
worldwide, including on national television, as they performed on the Huckabee
Show in February 2023.

From an initial enrollment of 278 students and 13 programs
in 1963 to over 2,000 credit students exploring 56 plans of study options each semester,
the institution has kept its focus on its students and community. In addition
to the credit students, the college serves several thousand students per
semester through the Workforce Education and Training short-term, programs,
including commercial driving training, heavy equipment operation, underground
directional drilling, and a leadership academy.

In 1961, the Arkansas General Assembly, recognizing the need
for expanded vocational education opportunities, provided state funds for the
construction and operation of a second post-secondary vocational-technical
school. Arkansas’ first postsecondary vocational-technical school had opened in
Pine Bluff in 1959, and it was originally intended to serve the needs of the
entire state.

The first classes began in September 1963 with training
offered for post-secondary students in the following areas: appliance service,
auto and diesel mechanics, construction technology (consisting of drafting and
surveying, heavy equipment operation and maintenance, and building
construction), landscaping and horticulture, machine shop, office practices
(typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, office machines, data processing), practical
nursing, printing, and welding.

Petit Jean Vo-Tech served Arkansas for 30 years as an adult
vocational school. In 1991, in order to provide more effective, improved
delivery systems of education, Petit Jean Vo-Tech made the revolutionary transformation
to a two-year technical college.

That year, Petit Jean Vocational Technical Director Nathan
Crook, who had been appointed in 1985, worked with State Senator Allen Gordon
in helping lead the charge to convert 14 of the state’s vo-techs to more
comprehensive two-year colleges. The
resulting legislation, the “Two-Year Postsecondary Education Reorganization Act
of 1991” (Act 1244) was signed into law by then governor, Bill Clinton,
transforming Petit Jean Vo-Tech to Petit Jean Technical College (PJTC). State
authority was transferred from the Arkansas Board of Vocational-Technical
Education to the Arkansas Board of Higher Education, and the college expanded
its curriculum to include general education courses that were transferable to
other state colleges and universities.

In 1997, Petit Jean Technical College changed its name to
Petit Jean College in order to better reflect its more comprehensive mission.
On August 22, 2000, the citizens of Conway County approved a permanent ¼ cent
sales and use tax in support of the college.

In 2001, Petit Jean College merged with the University of
Arkansas System, becoming one of now 20 independent campuses and entities
backed by the UA tradition of excellence.
This affiliation with the University of Arkansas System has allowed
UACCM to collaborate with other UA System institutions, including the
University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, University of Arkansas at Fort Smith,
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and the University of Arkansas
Criminal Justice Institute. These partnerships further expand access and
options available to students within the immediate service area.

UACCM’s unique relationship with Morrilton and the
surrounding central Arkansas area, coupled with the support of the UA System,
began to receive state and national recognition, as in 2010 it was named one of
the fastest-growing community colleges in the United States. UACCM was named
one of Arkansas’s 2023 Most Admired Companies and one of the Best Arkansas
Community Colleges by Arkansas Money & Politics, the #1 Community College
in Arkansas by online educational rating platform Stacker, and listed as one of
the 2022 Best Colleges in Arkansas by online school ranking company Niche.

The UACCM campus has continued to see significant growth,
with the Nathan C. Crook University Center opening in 2004, the Library Complex
opening in 2009, and the Dr. Larry D. Davis Workforce Training Center opening
in 2018. The college is scheduled to break ground by the end of the year on a
new Nursing and Science Center.
