No Smoking at Bruce Street Entrance

Students:
I need to remind you that smoking at the Bruce Street entrance to campus (by the Kirk Building and Child Care) is prohibited. Even though it may appear to be off-campus, you are still on campus which is a violation of state law and school policy. The landscaped area outside this entrance and the grass area along each fence line are still on campus, therefore smoking is not allowed in these areas!

I have informed our Campus Police Officers to make this a point of emphasis over the next several weeks, including, if necessary, writing campus and/or state citations for violations. Yesterday, this area was cleaned by our Maintenance department. My expectation is that it will remain clean and a presentable, professional entrance to our campus.

When Should I Expect My Refund?

If you are expecting to receive Pell Grant funds, scholarship funds, SEOG or student loan funds, the money will first be applied to any outstanding balances at UACCM automatically. After expenses, any remaining funds will refunded to you. Since there is a two week refund policy for tuition and books, financial aid refunds cannot be processed until after the first two weeks of classes. Reconciling all charges to each student account typically takes another week, and cutting checks and ordering funds an additional week. Refunds will be issued in this order: loans, Pell Grants, scholarships, SEOG, and all others.

Targeted Processing Dates:

Loans processed the fifth week of classes for fall and spring semesters and second week of summer semesters.
Pell Grants processed the fifth week of classes for fall and spring semesters and second week of summer semesters.
Remainder of aid processed the sixth week and later

These are only target dates. The financial aid staff works very hard to insure that everyone receives their funds as quickly as possible.

Just Desserts

The UACCM Foundation will host the 10th annual Just Desserts fundraiser on Thursday, February 9 from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm in the Plaza and adjoining courtyard. This event features a variety of desserts, savory snacks, and musical entertainment, as well as silent and chance auctions.

We also need your help!
The Foundation is currently seeking donations for both desserts and silent and chance auction items. When thinking about auction items, get creative. Showcase your unique talents (sewing, woodworking, painting, pottery, photography, etc.). If you are willing to bring a dessert item, or if you or you would like to donate auction items or baked goods, please contact Mary Newsome - (501) 977-2044, newsome@uaccm.edu or Mary Clark - (501) 977-2011 or clark@uaccm.edu.

UACCM Theatre Auditions!

UACCM Theatre will be holding auditions for the spring musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone. Auditions are open to the public and everyone is encouraged to try out! Auditionees will be asked to sing a short, familiar song of their choice and read from provided scenes. Auditions will be held on Monday, February 6 from 6pm until 9pm in the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium.

I hope your Spring 2012 semester is off to a great start. The Administration, Faculty, & Staff are very excited you have chosen UACCM to continue your education.

I need to give you of a couple of very important public safety reminders.

Make sure you have a valid UACCM parking permit properly displayed on your vehicle. If you do not have one, you can get one at the Information Desk in the University Center. Parking permits are FREE!!
If you want to receive emergency notifications (weather, life-threating, etc.) by phone and/or email you must sign up for AlertXpress. You can log on to your Campus Connect Account and go to STUDENT INFORMATION>ALERTXPRESS http://www.uaccm.edu/Current_Student/alertXpress.html
As we discussed in New Student Orientation, please make sure you are abiding by the Student Code of Conduct. I want to remind you that Alcohol and Drugs are strictly prohibited on our campus. Also, Weapons of any kind, including hunting rifles “accidentally left in your truck after hunting”, are strictly prohibited. Please make sure you are abiding be these two very important issues. DO NOT BRING ALCOHOL, DRUGS, OR WEAPONS TO CAMPUS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES OR THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES.

The last days to register for Full-Term Spring classes at the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton are January 4 and 5. These will also be the last days to register for 5-Week 1 and 8-Week 1condensed term classes. If you have received your acceptance letter to UACCM, then book your advising appointment to register for classes at www.uaccm.edu. If you have not received your acceptance letter, then contact the Admissions Office at 501-977-2053. Students who are not able to meet the January 5 deadline will still be able to register for 5-Week II and 10-Week classes on February 15 & 16. The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton's Phi Beta Lambda chapter hosted the fifth annual UACCM Pageant, in the Fine Arts Auditorium. The pageant was open to current UACCM students and girls between the ages of birth and 17 years.
The winner of Ms. UACCM received a $1,000 scholarship and the first alternate received a $400 scholarship sponsored by the UACCM Chancellor’s Office. The second alternate received a $300 scholarship; and the third alternate received a $200 scholarship sponsored by UACCM Phi Beta Lambda. The fourth alternate received a $100 scholarship sponsored by the UACCM Chancellor’s Office. In addition, Ms. UACCM and her royalty received many gifts from local businesses.

NIGHT OF LUMINARIES

Night of Luminaries is TOMORROW (Dec. 1)!

The Night of Luminaries is a free event for all students and members of the community. It will be held on the UACCM campus immediately following the Morrilton Christmas Parade (which should be around 6:00) and will continue till 8:00pm.

There will be over 2000 beautiful luminary bags lining the roads on campus for people to drive through and enjoy. All of the luminary bags are decorated by students from area schools.
Kids will have a chance to stop by the plaza courtyard and see Santa after he arrives from his appearance in the Christmas Parade.
Everyone will be able to enjoy free cookies and refreshments.
Kids will also receive a free gift bag!

Due to the annual Night of Luminaries free holiday event scheduled for this Thursday, December 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, we ask that you take note of and abide by the following changes in the entrances/exits to/from UACCM that evening:

· For the safety of Night of Luminaries volunteers and patrons, traffic through campus will be one-way beginning at 5:00 pm. Outside traffic is asked to enter campus using the Bruce Street Entrance on the east end of campus and exit through the newest university Boulevard exit on the far west end of campus.

· The main University Boulevard entrance will be closed completely to thru traffic beginning shortly after 4:00 pm on Thursday. Those leaving the University Center/BTC parking lot after this time will need to use the newest University Boulevard exit, located west of the University Center.

· Please do not enter campus using the newest University Boulevard entrance. A portion of the entrance will be blocked off.

· Please do not exit campus using the Bruce Street exit. A portion of the exit will also be blocked off.

Arkansas 2032 Conference

UACCM is looking for one student to represent the college at the "Arkansas 2032" Conference.

The Clinton School will be hosting a conference for “Arkansas 2032” initiative on April 27-28, and they have asked UACCM to select one student to attend as a representative from the college. The conference will bring students from all across the state together to plan our future of the next 20 years. All of the students who will be selected from each school in attendance are required to have a record of academic excellence, a display of strong leadership, and to enjoy engaging in issue and policy discussions.

The selection committee will begin taking applications from students on November 1 and will continue to accept them until Friday, December 2. In order to be considered in the selection process, students must have 24 credit hours completed by the end of this fall semester while having maintained a GPA of 3.25 or higher. Applicants should submit a completed application form (which can be found here http://www.uaccm.edu/current_student/2012_arkansas_2032_conference.pdf), 1 recommendation letter (details can be found on the application form), and a one-page essay expressing why they would like to attend this conference concerning Arkansas future.

UACCM Theatre Presents a Neil Simon Classic!

The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton would like to invite everyone to the UACCM Theatre Department's production of Neil Simon's "Last of the Red Hot Lovers." The play follows middle-aged and married, overworked and overweight, Barney Cashman who is having a mid-life crisis and decides to have an affair. He arranges three seductions: the first, Elaine Navazio proves to be a foul-mouthed bundle of neuroses; Bobbi Michele is next, a 20-ish actress who's too kooky by half; finally comes Jeanette Fisher, a gloomy, depressed housewife who happens to be married to Barney's best friend. This Neil Simon classic comedy will have you rolling in the aisles and questioning the ideas of what it means to be a decent human. Performances will take place in the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium on October 27^th, 28^th, 29^th at 7:30 pm, and on October 30^th at 2:30 pm. The University ofArkansas Community College at Morrilton Music Department has twoexciting events during the month of October. The first event will bethe annual fall concert on Thursday, Oct. 20, featuring the UACCMConcert Choir, University Singers, and Soundscape. This free concertis entitled “Around the World” and will feature music from manydifferent regions including Africa, India, Asia, Ireland, and thegood old USA! There will be two separate showings of the concert: one at 12:05 p.m. and an evening performance at 7 p.m. Both showingswill be held in the UACCM Fine Arts auditorium and are free and opento the public.

The second event is apart of the 2011-2012 Soundscape Salon Series. This year’s seriesfeatures music of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Tocommemorate fifty years since its establishment, the University ofArkansas Community College at Morrilton (UACCM) will host acommunity-wide party on Thursday, October 13. The event will begin at5 p.m. with a free BBQ and chicken dinner for all area residents,just as the institution did for the original dedication five decadesago.

Thisyear marks three major milestones for the institution: fifty yearssince its creation by the Arkansas General Assembly; 20 years as atwo-year college; and 10 years as a member of the University ofArkansas System.

Dinner,featuring smoked pork and chicken, will be served from 5 to 7 p.m.Following the dinner, there will be a free concert at 7 p.m. byfour-time, Grammy-nominated band Trout Fishing in America. TroutFishing in America is a musical duo which performs both folk/pop andchildren’s music. The duo is composed of Keith Grimwood and EzraIdlet and has received much critical recognition for both family andadult music.

Weather-permitting,all events will take place outside on the campus grounds in the areabetween the Fine Arts Building, The Plaza, and the University Center.Limited seating will be provided, but individuals may bring chairs orblankets for additional outdoor seating.

As UACCM celebrates several importanthistorical highlights, the college reflects on a proud past ofserving the region. The mission of a commitment to excellence inlearning and personal enrichment is reflected in several significantways: a dedicated faculty and staff who have a combined total ofalmost 800 years of service to the college; ambitious students fromall walks of life; and an ongoing ability to respond rapidly to theevolving needs of the area’s workforce requirements.

From an initial enrollment of 278students and 13 programs in 1963 to the current almost 2300 creditstudents exploring 43 plans of study options, the institution haskept its focus on its students and the community. Over the pasthalf-century, the institution has been under the direction of justthree leaders: Thurston Kirk, Nathan Crook, and Dr. Larry Davis.

In 1961, the Arkansas General Assembly,recognizing the need for expanded vocational education opportunities,provided state funds for the construction and operation of a secondpost-secondary vocational-technical school. Arkansas’ firstpostsecondary vocational-technical school had opened in Pine Bluff in1959, and it was originally intended to serve the needs of the entirestate.

Cities throughout the state competedstrongly for consideration as the location for the secondvocational-technical school. While the decision was up to the StateBoard of Education, Governor Orval Faubus encouraged the Board toselect a site north and west of Little Rock, since the first schoolwas established south and east of Little Rock.

In 1962, the State Board of Educationvoted to consider sites at Morrilton and Fort Smith. Conway CountySheriff Marlin Hawkins and his wife, Marvine, agreed to make aninitial donation of 21 acres of property, ensuring Morrilton wasselected as the location for the new school. On June 10, 1962, theBoard officially named the school Petit Jean Vocational-TechnicalSchool, after a local landmark, Petit Jean Mountain, and appointedThurston Kirk as the director.

The first classes began in September1963 with training offered for post-secondary students in thefollowing areas: appliance service, auto and diesel mechanics,construction technology (consisting of drafting and surveying, heavyequipment operation and maintenance, and building construction),landscaping and horticulture, machine shop, office practices (typing,shorthand, bookkeeping, office machines, data processing), practicalnursing, printing, and welding.

Petit Jean Vo-Tech served Arkansas for30 years as an adult vocational school. In 1991, in order to providemore effective, improved delivery systems of education, Petit JeanVo-Tech made the revolutionary transformation to a two-year technicalcollege.

That year, Petit Jean VocationalTechnical Director Nathan Crook, who had been appointed in 1985,worked with State Senator Allen Gordon in helping lead the charge toconvert 14 of the state’s vo-techs to more comprehensive two-yearcolleges. The resulting legislation, the “Two-Year PostsecondaryEducation Reorganization Act of 1991” (Act 1244) was signed intolaw by then governor Bill Clinton, transforming Petit Jean Vo-Tech toPetit Jean Technical College (PJTC). State authority was transferredfrom the Arkansas Board of Vocational-Technical Education to theArkansas Board of Higher Education, and the college expanded itscurriculum to include general education courses that weretransferable to other state colleges and universities.

In 1997, Petit Jean Technical Collegechanged its name to Petit Jean College in order to better reflect itsmore comprehensive mission. On August 22, 2000, the citizens ofConway County approved a permanent ¼ cent sales and use tax insupport of the college.

In 2001, Petit Jean College merged withthe University of Arkansas System, becoming one of 18 independentcampuses and entities backed by the UA tradition of excellence. Thisaffiliation with the University of Arkansas System has allowed UACCMto collaborate with other UA System institutions, including theUniversity of Arkansas at Fayetteville, University of Arkansas atFort Smith, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and theUniversity of Arkansas Criminal Justice Institute. These partnershipsfurther expand access and options available to students within theimmediate service area.

UACCM looks forward to its continuedrole in serving the unique needs of the population through credit andnon-credit programs, adult education, and workforce training. As theskills set and technology requirements required by the labor marketchange, UACCM will further expand and adapt its curriculum to helpfoster continued economic development. This includes forminginnovative partnerships with other educational institutions,businesses, and industry to further expand access and optionsavailable to students within the immediate service area.

The college invites all former studentsand graduates of Petit Jean Vocational-Technical School, Petit JeanTechnical College, Petit Jean College, and the University of ArkansasCommunity College at Morrilton to help celebrate the 50^thanniversary milestone by joining the UACCM Alumni Association. UACCM PART OF CONSORTIUM RECEIVING FEDERAL GRANT

Two-yearcolleges receive $14.7 million federal funding to improve graduation,job placement rates

BENTONVILLE,Ark. - Officials announced Tuesday the state's two-year colleges havereceived a $14.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor torestructure higher education and target training to meet specificindustry needs, strengthen technology-enabled learning, and allowstudents and workers more flexibility in scheduling classes.

"Theproject's goal is to accelerate certificate and degree completions by15 percent by restructuring nearly 150 programs over the next threeyears," said Dr. Ed Franklin, executive director of the ArkansasAssociation of Two Year Colleges (AATYC).

ThePath to Accelerated Completion and Employment (PACE) Initiative willbe a collaborative effort between all of the state's 22 two-yearcolleges to reduce remediation and increase degree production, withNorthwest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) leading the consortium.The program is coordinated through AATYC in partnership with theArkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE), all of which workedtogether to receive the grant funding.

Supportfor development of the initiative was provided by Complete CollegeAmerica and the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation.

"Thisis a tremendous day for NWACC and all two-year colleges in Arkansas,"Dr. Becky Paneitz, NWACC president, said, "and more specificallyfor the students we serve. They will benefit from a programspecifically designed to break down barriers they may have towardreceiving the degrees or training they need to perform jobs in ourstate's largest career-growth areas."

Topeducation and government officials have clearly defined goals tochange remedial education, increase retention and double the numberof degree holders in the state by 2025.

"Byredesigning classes and schedules to help working students balancejobs and college," said Shane Broadway, ADHE interim director,"we hope to significantly boost student success and dramaticallyincrease the number of college graduates in the state. These dollarswill enable our two-year colleges, employers and other economicdevelopment partners to create a workforce that is prepared forcareers in high-wage, high-skills fields such as advancedmanufacturing and health care."

Specificstrategies for redesigning 42 associate's degree and 104 certificateprograms include improving developmental education, streamliningcertificate and degree pathways, reducing time-to-completion andcredit-to-completion, enhancing support technology and systems, andoverhauling student advisement to increase job placement.

"BaxterRegional Medical Center and ASU Mountain Home have been partners intraining for many years," said Ron Peterson, CEO of BaxterRegional Medical Center, "and we look forward to this excitingnew opportunity to fulfill the healthcare workforce needs in ourcommunity."

Aspart of the grant process, higher education officials reached out tobusiness and industry to ensure jobs would be available to workerswho completed training at the state's two-year colleges. Industrypartners include North Arkansas Regional Medical Center, L'Oreal USA,Caterpillar, Wabash Wood Products, Eaton Corporation-El DoradoChemical; Superior Industries International Arkansas, FirestoneBuilding Products, Pace Industries, Baxter Regional Medical, BaptistHealth, Tyson Foods Inc., CertainTeed Gypsum, South MississippiCounty Hospital, Great River Medical Center and Arkansas Children'sHospital.

Representativesof the Congressional delegation were on hand for the announcement,along with several other local government leaders.

UACCM Foundation’s “Aiming for Education” Pulls in $10,000

OnSeptember 18, the University of Arkansas Community College atMorrilton Foundation hosted the college’s fourth annual “Aimingfor Education” shooting competition fundraiser at Point RemoveLodge. Eleven three-person teams and dozens of youth participantscompeted against each other in a variety of shooting games includingclay pigeon shooting and team flurry exercises. Participants andspectators were also given opportunities to win one of several raffleticket drawings, as well as dozens of door prizes.

TroutFishing in America to Play at UACCM’s 50^th-YearParty

Thefour-time, Grammy-nominated music group Trout Fishing in America willbe the headliners at a free concert on the University of ArkansasCommunity College at Morrilton (UACCM) campus on Thursday, October 13at 7 pm.

Theconcert will close UACCM’s community-wide party that evening, whichcelebrates three major milestones for the institution: fifty yearssince its creation by the Arkansas General Assembly; 20 years as atwo-year college; and 10 years as a member of the University ofArkansas System. UACCM invites the public to attend thefamily-oriented event, which will begin with a free barbecue andchicken dinner at 5 pm. Weather-permitting, events will take placeoutside on the campus grounds between the Fine Arts Building, ThePlaza, and the Business Technology Center.

UACCMwas established as Petit Jean Vocational Technical School by the 1961Arkansas General Assembly. In September of 1963, as thenewly-constructed school prepared to open its doors for the veryfirst time, an invitation was extended for the community to attend afree BBQ and chicken dinner, and this party will pay tribute to thathistoric event.

TroutFishing in America is a musical duo which performs folk rock andchildren’s music and has received much critical recognition forboth family and adult music. The duo is composed of Keith Grimwood(upright bass, Clevinger bass, bass guitar, and vocals) and EzraIdlet (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, banjo, and vocals). Grimwoodand Idlet formed Trout Fishing in America on the streets of SantaCruz, California. The band was based for many years in Houston,Texas, but moved to the Prairie Grove, Arkansas area in 1992.

The University of ArkansasCommunity College at Morrilton (UACCM) today held an informativepresentation on its plans for the future connection to the newArkansas Research and Education Optical Network (ARE-ON).

As one of Arkansas e-Link’s partners,ARE-ON is a state-of-the-art, fiber optic network that providesinternet bandwidth for colleges and universities across Arkansas.

According to Mike Abbiatti, executivedirector of Arkansas Research and Education Optical Network (ARE-ON),“The Arkansas e-Link initiative is an excellent example of whathappens when three critical higher education organizations, UAMS,AATYC, and ARE-ON, join forces with a common vision. E-link is notabout fiber infrastructure, it is about what we DO with theinfrastructure to improve healthcare and education for the citizensof Arkansas. E-link will be a factor in empowering the NaturalState in changing its national perception from “poor me” to‘FOLLOW ME!’ ”

In August 2010 the University ofArkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), accompanied by officials fromfederal and state agencies, received a $102 million grant from thefederal Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP), known nowas Arkansas e-Link.

Arkansas e-Link, a three-year project,will enable fiber connections and/or bandwidthupgrades in all 75 counties and in 135 Arkansas communities,including 81 Arkansas hospitals, all two-year colleges (four-yearcolleges are already connected), eight public libraries, all statehuman development centers, the state’s trauma network, communityhealth centers, mental health clinics and home health agencies; 474community anchor sites total.

“What makes this grant so critical toArkansas is that our state ranks 50th in the percentage of householdswith a computer, 50th in percentage of households with Internetaccess and 46th in percentage of households with broadband access,”said Debbie Green, project director of Arkansas e-Link. “Arkansasalso ranks third worst in the country for early deaths. So the needis obvious, and we’ll be able to vastly improve upon thosestatistics.”

UACCM along with the other educationsites will have the ability to deliver distance learning, provide newopportunities for sharing curriculum and other resources, andincrease the ability of two-year colleges to meet the training needsof businesses and industries in their communities.

UACCM Chancellor Dr. Larry Davissaid “We are honored to become the first Arkansas community collegeto connect with this new fiber-optic network that will provide nearlyunlimited bandwidth for colleges and universities across Arkansas.ARE-ON opens up expanded opportunities and gives us the resources weneed to fully develop our ability to help our students succeed.”

Petroleum Technology Major

Full-time student with at least six hours of courses that count towards the Petroleum Technology plan of study

2.75 GPA or higher

First-semester students will be awarded based on high school GPA, ACT scores, or COMPASS scores

High School GPA must be a 2.75 or higher.

Students using ACT score must have a minimum score of 17 on math, 19 on reading, and 19 on English.

Students using the COMPASS score must have a minimum score of 26 on algebra or 49 on pre-algebra, 83 on reading, and 77 on writing.

Students who have completed 12 or more hours (including developmental) at another college or university must have a 2.75 or higher transfer GPA. The transfer GPA supersedes any HS GPA or test scores.

UACCM Earns NAEYC Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Commission on Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation has recently announced that it has granted accreditation to the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton’s Early Childhood Development Associate Degree Program. UACCM is one of twelve associate degree programs sponsored by eight institutions of higher education to receive the accreditation this year.

This brings the total number of accredited programs to 136 since the accreditation system was launched in 2006 and UACCM is one of only three accredited two-year colleges in the state. The accreditation system establishes professional preparation standards to raise the quality of early childhood teacher education, and in turn raise the quality of early education programs serving young children. Accredited associate degree programs provide access to the profession and a strong foundation for the diverse pool of early childhood teachers that are needed in the field.

Federal Head Start regulations call for an associate’s degree or higher for teachers, and many states include early childhood associate degrees in their Quality Rating and Improvement Systems for child care and preschool programs. NAEYC’s professional standards for early childhood degree programs provide a high measure of quality by which teacher education programs can be evaluated.

Along with the NAEYC accreditation, The Arkansas Department for Higher Education has given UACCM’s Early Childhood Education Department approval for a birth to 5 years old teaching credential from the Department of human Services Division of Childcare and Early Childhood Education. After students graduate with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Early Childhood Education and meet all the requirements, this credential will open more job opportunities as well as give them more potential to earn a higher paying salary.

UACCM ARE-ON Presentation

The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton invites area residents to attend an informative presentation on its plans for the future connection to the new Arkansas Research and Education Optical Network (ARE-ON). ARE-ON is a state-of-the-art, fiber optic network that will provide nearly unlimited internet bandwidth for colleges and universities across Arkansas. The goals of the ARE-ON project, which has now been named Arkansas e-Link, are to improve opportunities for schools to deliver distance learning, provide new opportunities to collaborate with other schools by sharing curriculum and other resources, and increase the ability of two-year colleges to meet the training needs of businesses/industries in their communities. UACCM will be the first of 22 two-year colleges in the state to be connected to the network.

The network is being made possible through a grant received by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). UAMS was the receipt of a Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) Comprehensive Community Infrastructure grant in the amount of $102,131,393 from the National Telecommunications Information Administration of the Department of Commerce. The overall grant will support UAMS’s $128 Million effort to expand bandwidth capacities and broadband equipment at 474 of the state’s community anchor institutions.The project is expected to be completed in three years.

The press conference and information session at UACCM will be held on Tuesday, September 13, from 1 pm to 2 pm in UACCM’s Business Technology Center, Room 203. UACCM UNIVERSITY BLVD. PROMENADE

The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton is set to begin phase one of the University Boulevard Promenade building project thanks to a $210,000 grant from the Arkansas Highway Commission. The Promenade will be a walking path that will allow students to travel safely along University Boulevard from the main sections of the campus to the University Bookstore. The path will be equipped with lighting, park benches, and two bridges that will span the creek which travels through the middle of the campus. Construction is expected to begin in the Spring of 2012 and work is already underway to apply for a second grant to complete phase two of the project.

The project was made possible by the $12 million in federal funding allotted to the Arkansas Highway Commission for local Transportation Enhancement Program projects in Arkansas for 2011. The UACCM Promenade was one of the 74 projects covered by these funds. The Enhancement category of funding was created by Congress in 1991 for non-traditional transportation-related projects such as historic preservation, beautification, pedestrian/bicycle facilities, and scenic highway enhancements. “The Commission provides the citizens of Arkansas with the best possible system of highways,” stated Highway Commission Chairman R. Madison Murphy. “I am very pleased that we are also able to assist local communities with projects such as these. The local pride that is created by the projects can’t be measured. We are glad to play a small role in their development.”

Aiming for Education

The fourth annual “Aiming for Education” Skeet Shoot fundraiser for the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton Foundation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 18, 2011 at Point Remove Lodge in Hattieville. The UACCM Foundation hopes to raise proceeds that will help provide broader opportunities and services to our students and the residents of the College’s service area.

“Aiming for Education” will consist of 15 three-person skeet shooting teams, and will also feature a youth clay shoot contest open to 40 youth participants. The cost of entry for the adult skeet shoot is $50 per player or $150 for each three-person team, and 10, 12, and 20-gauge ammunition will be provided. Mixed teams of men and women are welcome. The cost of entry for the youth trap shoot is $25 for each participant, which includes a Ducks Unlimited Greenwing membership. A casual dinner will be served at the close of the event. All registered players will receive a gift bag, and door prizes will be awarded throughout the day.

The UACCM Foundation is seeking sponsors for the event in the form of 10 Gauge ($2500), 12 Gauge ($1000), 16 Gauge ($500), 20 Gauge ($250), and .410 ($100) sponsorships. The Foundation, comprised of a volunteer board of directors, oversees the various fundraising activites undertaken on behalf of the college as well as the management and allocation of the funds received. The Foundation is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation making most contributions tax0deductible.

Griffin Announces Continuation of ‘Jump-Starting Jobs Tour’

Congressman Tim Griffin (AR-02) announced more details of his “Jump-Starting Jobs Tour,” a series of town hall-style meetings that he is hosting throughout the Second District over the month of August. Yesterday, Griffin held similar events in Conway and Little Rock. After completion of the Jump-Starting Jobs Tour, Griffin will have held 24 town hall-styled meetings in the District in the eight months since taking office. The media and the public are encouraged to attend.

On Thursday, July 21, a free outdoor screening of the newest addition to the The Fast and the Furious franchise, Fast Five will be shown in downtown Morrilton. UACCM is happy to have teamed up with Morrilton Parks and Recreation and the City of Morrilton to host this special Starlight Cinema in downtown Morrilton at the Broadway Pocket Park, which is located across from the Morrilton Depot. The movie night is scheduled to begin shortly after 9:00 pm. or as soon as the sky is dark. Concessions will be provided at no charge. Bring your lawn chairs or picnic blankets for seating and enjoy a fun, free night out!

Fast Five is an action film starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, and Jordana Brewster. The movie follows Dominic Toretto and his crew as they find themselves on the wrong side of the law once again when they try to switch lanes between a ruthless drug lord and a relentless federal agent. Sacred Heart School to Host Cajun Fête

On July 9^th, Sacred Heart Catholic School will be cooking up a Cajun spread. The Oxford American magazine is hosting the first Oxford American Summit for Ambitious Writers, a five-day, creatively intense workshop for writers seeking to enhance their literary skills from June 21-26, 2011, at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute on Petit Jean Mountain. The Summit will feature an all-star roster of faculty and guest speakers and will offer participants the opportunity to improve their writing in a peaceful and stimulating environment.

As part of the Summit, there is an impressive list of events open to the public, including lectures by The New Yorker magazine editor David Remnick and Editor Emeritus of The Atlantic William Whitworth.

Attention area kids and parents! Registration for the 2011 Kid’s College at UACCM is now open. This year, Kid’s College will take the imaginations of area first through third graders to the top of the world by guiding them on an amazing “Polar Expedition” to explore the sights and sounds of the Arctic Circle. Participants will also climb aboard the “Space Ship Discovery” and blast off to the furthest reaches of outer space. The fun-filled week is scheduled for July 11 through 14, 2011.

During Kid’s College, students will attend class each day from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Business Technology Center on the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton’s campus. Throughout this time, they will learn all about the history, culture, and natural environment of the Arctic Circle before launching into the solar system and beyond to discover information on the stars and planets. Kid’s College will also feature many hands-on activities, games, scientific investigations and art projects designed to enhance math and science skills among the children while maintaining a fun and exciting experience.

The fee for Kid’s College 2011 will be $40 per student. If a family plans to enroll more than one child, a $30 registration fee will be charged for the second child and a $20 registration fee will be charged for all additional children. Children must be entering first through third grades in fall 2011 to be eligible to attend. Kid’s College is only open to 40 participants, and spaces are filling quickly. LINKS FOR LEARNING RAISES OVER $14,000 FOR UACCM FOUNDATION

This year’s sixth annual Links for Learning Golf Tournament fundraiser for the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton (UACCM) Foundation was a huge success. A field of nearly 120 golfers gathered at the Morrilton Country Club on a beautiful sunny day to compete in the three-person scramble tournament that helped raise over $14,000 in proceeds for the UACCM Foundation. Along with the tournament, the participants were given an opportunity to show their golf skills with Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, and Putting Contests. Throughout the day, teams were treated to limitless refreshments, door prizes, and all the BBQ they could eat. Once the teams had finished playing and the scores were being calculated, the tournament’s finale took place. The “Golf Ball Drop” consisted of hundreds of numbered golf balls being poured down from the bucket of Morrilton Fire Department’s snorkel truck that was positioned nearly fifty feet in the air above a hole near the putting green. The owner of the ticket number matching the number of the ball that landed closest to the hole won the largest prize of the day, $1000 cash. A second prize of $50 was given to the person’s ball that landed the furthest from the hole. Defying the odds, Mark Stobaugh won the $1000 prize for the second year in a row. UACCM’s Director of Marking and Public Relations, Mary Clark was the winner of the $50 ‘Farthest from the Hole’ prize after her golf ball managed to bounce and roll it’s way almost a hundred feet from the hole.

Of course, none of it would have been possible if it weren’t for the outstanding support of the area businesses and individuals who made contributions and volunteered their time to help with the tournament.”

Southwestern Energy Company served as the tournament’s $3,500 Platinum Sponsor. Crafton Tull & Associates were $2,000 Gold Sponsors. Farmers and Merchants Bank provided all of the food for the tournament, which qualified them as a $1,000 Tournament level sponsor. The event had nine $500 Team Sponsors: Benchmark Title Company, DeSoto Drilling, Maus Implement Company, Mobley Construction Company, Inc., Nabholz Construction, NESCO Field Services, LLC, Petit Jean Meats, Petit Jean State Bank, and Regions Bank. New Scholarship Available

Here is some information on a new scholarship available to UACCM students who qualify.

The Arkansas Association for Developmental Education (ArkADE ) is offering (2) $500 Scholarships for the Fall 2011 semester.

The minimum qualifications are:
- The student must have completed 12 hours of college work with at least 3 hours of developmental education coursework.
- Student must have attained a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on all coursework completed
- Student must be enrolled in an Arkansas higher education institution

The students will be chosen based on:
- Personal Essay
- Scholarship
- Written recommendation from a faculty member

Links for Learning '11

The UACCM Foundation’s 6th annual “Links for Learning” golf tournament will be held on Thursday, May 19 at the Morrilton Country Club. The format is a three-person scramble (men’s teams, women’s teams, and mixed teams all welcome), and all teams will tee off at 10:00 a.m.

Entry fees are $75 per person or $225 per team. Registration fee includes green fees, cart, lunch, awards ceremony/reception, and goody bag.

UACCM GRAPHIC DESIGNER WINS PARAGON AWARD

UACCM graphic/web designer Trevor Mize was recently honored with a bronze Paragon Award from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) in the category of best college Web site. The awards were announced at NCMPR’s national conference in Philadelphia, PA in March.

The UACCM Web site was voted third best in the country among competing two-year colleges by a national panel of judges. Entries in the category of Web site were judged based on content, structure and navigation, visual design, functionality, interactivity, and overall experience.

The National Council for Marketing and Public Relations is an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges, and is the only organization exclusively designed for marketing and public relations personnel from the country’s community, junior and technical colleges. The NCMPR's prestigious national Paragon Awards recognize outstanding achievement in communications. Winners hail from large, multi-campus districts and small institutions, from large staffs to one-person shops. There are over 600 member colleges in the organization, and approximately 1500 Paragon entries were received in 44 categories.

The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton (UACCM) Foundation is making preparations for its sixth annual “Links for Learning” fund-raising golf tournament. The three-person scramble tournament is scheduled for May 19 at the Morrilton Country Club with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.

The cost of entry for the tournament is $75 per person or $225 for each three-person team. Players will receive access to a golf cart, snacks and beverages throughout the day, lunch, access to an awards ceremony reception and a gift bag with each paid entry fee. The awards ceremony reception will be in the Morrilton Country Club dining room following the tournament, and prizes will be awarded for top scorers in three flights. There will be a hole-in-one contest, a putting contest, and chances to improve overall scores through donations. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the day in the clubhouse and prizes will also be given for longest drive and closest to the pin winners.

There will be a golf ball drop contest, which will allow tournament participants as well as the general public to purchase chances for numbered golf balls which will be dropped from the sky during the tournament. The owner of the ball that lands closest to the pin will win a $1,000 grand prize. Tickets for the contest are $10 each and will be pre-sold to the public beginning April 1 by calling (501) 977-2011. Tickets will also be available for purchase on the day of the tournament at the Morrilton Country Club.

The College Foundation is currently seeking sponsors in the form of Platinum ($3,500), Gold ($2,000), Silver ($1,000), Team ($500), Hole ($100) sponsorships. The benefits of each level of sponsorship are listed on the college Web site at www.uaccm.edu by clicking on “Foundation Info,” then “Links for Learning.” Team ($500) sponsors and above will each receive at least one free team entry valued at $225.

The tournament will fill when 36 teams have registered. Entry and sponsorship forms are available online at www.uaccm.edu or by calling Mary Clark at (501) 977-2011. Forms should be returned by may 16.

The UACCM Foundation, which is comprised of a volunteer board of directors, oversees the various fundraising activities undertaken on behalf of the college as well as the management and allocation of the funds received. The Foundation is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation making most contributions tax-deductible.

The Glass Menagerie is a drama of great tenderness, charm, and beauty and is one of the most famous plays of the modern theatre. If you are graduating in the spring or summer, you should take the survey on your ANGEL account. The survey will close Friday, May 6th. We use the results of the Graduate Survey for assessing our programs and getting feedback on UACCM. Their feedback is completely confidential, no IP addresses are saved in their responses.

Russellville Symphony Guild Offers Free Admission to UACCM Students

aThe Russellville Symphony Guild is offering current UACCM students FREE general admission to an upcoming concert by the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, April 2 at 8 p.m. in Witherspoon Auditorium on the campus of Arkansas Tech University. The concert will feature a mix of classical music and pop favorites.

Regular ticket prices include reserved tickets for $25 per person, which includes a 6 p.m. pre-concert reception at Lake Point Conference Center; adult general admission tickets for $10, and $5 for children.

It is not necessary for UACCM students to reserve their tickets in advance, but they must provide proof of college I.D. in order to gain free admission to the concert.

Reserved concert seating and reception tickets may be purchased in advance by calling Russellville Symphony Guild Board member Ann Squyres at (479) 968-5080 or Mary Clark at (479) 970-9004. Tickets may also be purchased at the door the evening of the concert.

The program will open with Johann Strauss’ “Radetzky March, Op. 228.” The concert will continue with familiar crowd favorites, including the “Cinderella Waltz” from “Cinderella,” Henry Mancini’s classic, “Moon River,” a selection from Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story,” and Brahms “Hungarian Dance No. 5.” After a brief intermission, the Orchestra will conclude the program with Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, Op. 64.”

Literary Coterie Scholarship

The UACCM Financial Aid Office is currently accepting applications for the Literary Coterie Scholarship. Two (2) scholarships will be awarded for $500 each for the Spring 2011 semester to UACCM students. Deadline to apply is April 8, 2011.

Applicants must meet the following qualifications to apply:
• Must be a Conway County Resident
• Enrolled full-time for the Spring 2011 Semester
• Must have a 3.00 cumulative GPA
• Not a prior recipient of this scholarship

The scholarship only covers tuition, fees, and books – no refund will be given to the student.

Applicants need to complete a UACCM Scholarship Application and write in Literary Coterie as the scholarship being applied for and return it to the Financial Aid Office by April 8.

Arkansas Tech University Transfer Scholarship

Applications are now available to apply for a President’s Honor Scholarship to ATU for the Fall 2011 semester. Any student planning to transfer to Arkansas Tech University in the Fall 2011 semester who has completed 30 to 60 hours of college classes can apply. ATU allows the UACCM Scholarship Committee to select one President’s Honor Scholarship each Spring. Preference will be given to students graduating with an AA degree in May. This scholarship will pay up to $2550 per semester in bill charges and is renewable for two years as long as the student maintains 15 hours with a 3.25 GPA. Applicants must complete a UACCM Scholarship application and indicate ATU Scholarship on the application.

UA Fort Smith Transfer Student Scholarship

Applications are now available to apply for a Chancellor’s Transfer Scholarship to UA Fort Smith for the Fall 2011 semester. Any student planning to transfer to UA Fort Smith in the Fall 2011 semester who will graduate with an Associates degree and a 3.0 cumulative GPA can apply. UA Fort Smith allows the UACCM Scholarship Committee to select two Chancellor’s Transfer Scholarships each Spring. The scholarship will pay up to $3500 per year for two years as long as the student completes 30 credit hours at the end of each spring term with a 3.0 cumulative GPA and enrolls full-time each semester. Applicants must complete a UACCM Scholarship application and indicate UA Fort Smith Scholarship on the application.

Spring Fever - Driven to Distraction

As UACCM students welcome warmer weather, road trips and vacations, the Students R HEROES peer education group will sponsor a special event: Spring Fever – Driven to Distraction!! This campus-wide activity will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in conjunction with the UACCM 5K/2K Run Walk on Thursday, April 7. Games and activities will be located outdoors in the Plaza/Pavilion area and will stress the importance of living a healthy, alcohol-free lifestyle – including an emphasis on the dangers posed by driving distractions. The HEROES will be wearing vivid lime green shirts as they work the games, serve “mocktails”, and pass out prizes.

Some of the special activity areas include:

• Winning or Wasted - Make hoops at a huge inflatable basketball game and earn drink tickets that can be redeemed at the “mocktail bar.” The trick? Gotta score while wearing drunk-driving goggles!

• The Bar Exam –How much is a bottle of beer, glass of wine, or shot of hard liquor - really?? Test your skills!

• Driven to Distraction – Drive the course in a full-size DUI driving simulator…with the added challenge of driving distractions!

Tax Credit Opportunity for Students!

TAX TIME!!! The American Opportunity Tax Credit, originally included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, allows students to claim a tax credit of up to $2,500 per student.

To claim the American Opportunity Tax Credit for tax year 2009 and 2010 income tax returns, students or their families need to complete Form 8863 at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8863.pdf and follow the instructions there.

If a student had out-of-pocket textbook expenses or tuition and fees during 2009 or 2010 and no other financial grant aid covered those expenses, you may be able to claim the expenses as a credit. For each student, the credit is limited to $2,500.00.

Richard "Lefty" O'Neal

The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton is proud to announce a special visit and presentation by former professional baseball player, Baseball Hall of Fame author, and Morrilton native Richard “Lefty” O'Neal. O'Neal is the only white player to pitch for two teams in the Negro Leagues. He played for the Biloxi Dodgers and the San Antonio Block Sox. He also served in the United States Air Force for twenty-two years and currently serves as a corporate training consultant, a professional baseball scout, and executive board member for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. “My story is about one person with the right purpose, surrounded by the right people, making a difference.” says O'Neal. “My prayer is that it inspires you to make a positive difference one person at a time. Hopefully my life’s journey will encourage you when you are down and remind you to never quit trying to make a positive difference in other lives.”

O'Neal will be telling the story of coming so close to his dream of becoming a Major League Baseball player, what life was like for him as one of the only white players in the Negro Leagues of the 60s and 70s, his experiences as a Major League Scout, as well as sharing a bit of what it was like growing up here in Morrilton.

The presentation will be in the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium on Thursday, March 3, at 12:05 PM. Admission is free and open to the public. Copies of his book “Dreaming of the Minors, Living in the Bush,” which was recently placed in the Base Ball Hall of Fame library, will be available for purchase with the opportunity to have the book signed by O'Neal.
